A landmark novel of the Vietnam War

The men of the Long-Range Reconnaissance Patrol - Stagg, Wolverine, Mopar, Marvel Kim, and Gonzales - are commando-style soldiers, called “Lurps” for short. Five men, completely dependent on one another. Proud to the point of arrogance. They’re joined by Tiger, their mascot: a flea-bitten scavenging stray or “dust dog,” a sneak and a coward, lazy and haughty. But, like his masters in this dirtiest of all wars, a survivor.

When their buddies on Team Two-One disappear, the Lurp team members have to fight their own brass to go on a mission to find them. And suddenly a grueling war becomes an unimaginable nightmare.

Played at 90 speed, I found the book processed the real and reverent story vision that brings it alive with the values of combat reality inter exchanging communication such as “ole hoss” and starlight commentary during RnR. All based around a Mongolian dog in TOC.
These are the men of professional character and hopeless personality to succeed in their missions.

I read this book 25/30 years ago for the first time. And something about it stuck with me. I never forgot it. And I just listened to it again in 2023. And the affects are still the same. This book is one of the greatest books I've ever read. And one of the greatest books I've ever listened to. And it's just something about it and I can't pinpoint what it is, it just is.

There’s very little in the story actually about the dog. It’s much more about the soldiers. The narration is kind of odd and overly dramatic in the storyline is lacking substance

Not really about the dog
