The concluding section of this remarkable audiobook explores the ways that regional cultures have continued to dominate national politics from 1789 to 1988, and still help to shape attitudes toward education, government, gender, and violence, on which differences between American regions are greater than between European nations.

The book is long and sometimes boring. It is also insightful, informative, and provocative. A reviewer somewhere stated that Virginia gentlemen weren't just jerks, they were bred and trained to be jerks! What a great line, and what a great interpretation taken from the book. I really enjoyed this book and I recommend it to anyone interested in history or politics.
