Publisher's summary

Librarian Syd Murphy flees the carnage of a failed marriage by accepting an 18-month position in Jericho - a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. Her plans to hide out and heal her wounds fall by the wayside as she gets drawn into the daily lives of the quirky locals. She becomes fast friends with Maddie Stevenson, the enigmatic physician who has returned to the backcountry community to take over her late father's medical practice. Together they learn that life and love can have as many twists and turns as a country road.

As Good As Advertised

The setting for this book is the area where I was born and not far from where I now live. That was my original reason for risking a credit on 21 hour book. It is usually difficult to sustain interest in a book that long because there is often a lot of filler material in a book that long. There is some of that in this one but I'm glad I gave this selection a chance.
The twenty one hours went by much quicker than I thought they would because this is an excellent audiobook. This in spite of the fact that it took the two of them longer to make a move on each other than it has any couple thus far in the 21st century. The verbal sparring and repartee engaged in by Maddie and Syd as well as between David and Maddie is both witty and funny. I'm not sure how old the author is but the sexual banter between the two of them has all the wit and verve of a Three's Company episode. An excellent touch here is so much of the activities and dialogue of the people in a small mountain town that the author gets right. Far too often authors or narrators unfamiliar with the area try to shortcut getting right by assuming all southern towns, as well as all southern accents are the same. Well they're wrong; no matter how much they might believe Carroll O'Conner in 'The Heat of the Night' and Andy Griffith talk the same; they don't. Roma Jean Fremont the girl who continually falls down around Doctor Maddie Stevenson isn't fall down funny but is a nice little humorous aside.
This is one of the better audiobooks I've listened to for awhile; great story.

Smart, complicated and not one to put down

Story so believable. Characters very well developed. The author makes sure you can see and smell this place. Narrator also A+. There is a gay thread to the story but that isn’t the strength of it. It is about a place and the people who live and live there

Great chemistry between characters w/LOL moments

Good story with lots of colorful characters and interesting plot lines. Really liked the chemistry between Mattie and Syd. While I know the story continues into the book Aftermath, I almost wish McMan had decided to expand on and flush out several of the storylines more completely. Ultimately I think this could have been split things up into 2+ books. Might have read smoother in the last 1/3 of the book where there was a lot going on and things being brushed over. That said, I still highly recommend this book as a great listen. Found myself relating to many things. 👍👍

A MUST READ

I've read so many books from so many great authors. Or rather, audiobooks. But, hands down This turned out to be my favorite Lesbian book. Ever! Wow. Wow. Wow. It's so long (28 hours so prepare yourself). The descriptions of Jericho and each characters is so detailed that you literally feel you've known the town forever and have grown up with these characters. And it's like 20 hours later into the book that FINALLY Syd and Maddie get together. Good God they take forever, but, it's so written in a perfect way that Ann McMan has you on the edge of your seat. I love how Syd takes a while to figure out that she's a lesbian and loves Maddie. Not an overnight story. And when they do finally get together, it's very detailed and they take their time to grow the relationship. And Ann McMan gives us the time to savor each characters growth. You just sit back and enjoy. The other characters are as funny and everyone at some point or another has you laughing out loud. What a beautiful story. Hands down, Ann McMan, I hope this becomes a long series! And Christine Williams does a great job!

Wanted a better narrator.

Any additional comments?

This is my favorite of Ann McMan's books and I have read the kindle version many times. Sadly, the narrator was so badly matched to the story, I wasn't able to get past the second chapter before I turned it off. My two main complaints are that the main character's voices were too deep, and the overall skill level made the book feel cheap. With all due respect, I feel this story deserves a more talented narrator. The story itself is beautiful and well written. I highly recommend the kindle or paper versions.

Julianne

It was an amazing experience being able to listen to this audible, being transported to the lovely Jericho, with the nice locals and witnessing our protagonists going through a beautiful journey into falling in love, already on the way to buy some more from this autor.
