Die wohl bekannteste Novelle von Annette von Droste-Hülshoff geht auf einen realen Mordfall zurück.

Friedrich Mergel wächst als Sohn eines Trinkers in Westfalen auf. Mit 22 Jahren erschlägt er den Juden Aaron, von dem er sich öffentlich gedemütigt fühlt, unter einer Buche. Mergel flieht gemeinsam mit seinem ständigen Begleiter Johannes Niemand aus dem Dorf. Als 28 Jahre später ein verkrüppelter Mann aus türkischer Gefangenschaft ins Dorf zurückkehrt, glaubt man in ihm diesen Niemand zu erkennen. Einige Monate später findet man ihn erhängt an der so genannten Judenbuche - und identifiziert ihn durch eine Narbe als Friedrich Mergel.
