Ödön von Horváth (1901–1938) gilt als Autor von Volksstücken. Seine Stoffe waren jedoch nie regional verwurzelt. Im Volkstümlichen findet er die Möglichkeit, den kleinbürgerlichen Jargon vorzuführen, sein rohes und immer auch gewalttätiges Potential, das einen Nährboden für den aufkommenden Nationalsozialismus bildet. In seinem Roman "Jugend ohne Gott" (1937) nimmt er dieses Thema auf und spitzt es auf die Frage nach der moralischen Haltung und der Schuld des Einzelnen zu. Elisabeth Tworek beschreibt in ihrem Feature, wie die Deformierung von Sprache zum Symptom menschlicher Beziehungslosigkeit und einer desperaten Gesellschaft wird.
