In 1963, I was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, working as an all-source intelligence analyst with the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Production Center on the second floor of "B" Building at Arlington Hall Station, Virginia. Two of my colleagues, Tom Mumford and Brad Veek, also U.S. Navy Lieutenants, had become close buddies. Tom worked on Southeast Asia matters; Brad and I worked on Soviet matters.

Many days we had lunch together at the Officers’ Club on the station. A frequent topic of chatter among us was what we considered to be the sheer incompetence of our Commander-in-Chief, President John F. Kennedy. I won’t go into specific details because they are irrelevant now. Suffice it to say, we all agreed that Kennedy was wreaking havoc in our respective areas of responsibility. Our consensus was that somebody should get to Kennedy and get him to stop what he was doing. Jokingly, one of us (I don’t remember who) said somebody should take him out. But, emphatically, and most certainly, we did not seriously mean that somebody should get him to stop by actually shooting him. Things like that might happen in some other country, but not here, in the United States; no way!

Sometime between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 22, 1963, my two buddies and I were taking an extended lunch break over a few beers at the O’Club (it was Friday, after all) when people started running around talking excitedly. As soon as we found out that the hubbub was caused by the news that President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas, Texas, we were absolutely stunned. Almost as one, the three of us said, “Oh, Shit!” We thought the Soviets had successfully conspired to do it. Then we thought about what we had been saying in a place where anybody could have overheard us. The next thing we thought would happen would be our being dragged out of the O’Club in handcuffs and forcibly interrogated for “our part” in the conspiracy. Very deflated, we left our unfinished beers on the table and went home, looking over our shoulders to see if we were being tailed. As it turned out, we didn’t have to worry, but we still did. We also learned a lesson about cheap chatter and the possible fall-out from it. We never talked like that again.

Flashing forward to the present, author, Jacob Hornberger, in The Kennedy Autopsy, details the significant inconsistencies in the records and testimonies of witnesses and participants in activities relating to Kennedy’s assassination. What he says seems to make a good case that there was some sort of conspiratorial effort that resulted in the death by shooting of the President. That part of his conclusion that addresses “The National Security State” and its possible involvement grates on me. Call me naive if you want, but I never felt like such a State existed; at least, not during the time I actively served in the Intelligence Community.

The narrator, Kevin Pierce, has taken a well-written work and turned it into a gripping aural tale. His skill in storytelling is evident throughout the presentation. I rate this audiobook a 5-Star on content and a 5-Star on the narrator’s delivery. On both these counts, I highly recommend you get this audiobook.

What made the experience of listening to The Kennedy Autopsy the most enjoyable?

Kevin Pierce does an excellent job with the material. The authoritative voice gives weight to the facts being presented.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I was taken aback at the amount of inconsistency in the handling of Kennedy's body. I'm mainly a lover of history and not so much conspiracy theories. But this book, written by Hornberger backs up the data with references and court transcripts. Also, I did not know that Oliver Stone's movie "JFK" had such an impact of the public outcry for information that it actually inspired policy. I also did not know that there was a standoff between the secret service and medical examiners on how the body should have an autopsy.

This book puts you in the thick of it. And it is a fascinating thing to listen to.

Excellent examination of President Kennedy’s autopsy and the many questions revolving around it. This is well worth the read for anyone who is interested in the facts behind the most consequential murder in American history
