An anniversary edition of The New York Times bestselling collection of essays by two-time Grammy Award winner, creator of Little Voice on Apple TV+, and star of Netflix’s Girls5eva Sara Bareilles “resonates with authentic and hard-won truths” (Publishers Weekly)—and features new material on the hit Broadway musical Waitress.

Sara Bareilles “pours her heart and soul into these essays” (Associated Press), sharing the joys and the struggles that come with creating great work, all while staying true to yourself. Imbued with humor and marked by Sara’s confessional writing style, this essay collection tells the inside story behind some of her most popular songs. Well known for her chart-topper “Brave,” Sara first broke through in 2007 with her multi-platinum single “Love Song.” She has since released seven studio albums that have sold millions of copies and spawned several hits, not to mention creating and starring in the hit Broadway musical Waitress.

“A breezy, upbeat, and honest reflection of this multitalented artist” (Kirkus Reviews), Sounds Like Me reveals Sara Bareilles, the artist—and the woman—on songwriting, soul-searching, and what’s discovered along the way.

Critic reviews

"Sara Bareilles is one of my favorite humans, and in my opinion, one of the finest singers and pop music artists of our time... This book, like her songs, is like having a conversation with the lady herself." (Ben Folds, from the book's foreword)
"Her prose has a natural rhythm, and the stories behind each song are organically woven throughout. Fans will be more enamored, as, like Bareilles’s music, this biography resonates with authentic and hard-won truths.”
“A chart-topping singer/songwriter exposes ‘the inner workings of my mind and my heart’ through this intimate essay collection anchored with music and humor… Bareilles conveys her life and career in a series of heartfelt, confessional ruminations written with the passion with which she hones her musical craft, forming an entertaining and candid scrapbook chockablock with memories, lyrics, stories, and photographs… A breezy, upbeat, and honest reflection of this multitalented artist.”
“Reading the book is like listening to your friend share a really good story over a long overdue coffee date—it just feels so honest.“
"Bareilles pours her heart and soul into these essays."

I loved this book. Honestly, I wasn't sure who Sarah was but I had just listened to Ben Folds book and he was mentioned on this. Once I heard the songs I knew who she was. Once I listened to her in this book, I wish I had grown up with her. Such a cool process of going through her life moments. My favorite part by far was her letters to herself. Just amazing. I wish I could look at my "chapters" and write them back to myself. Albeit a much less adventurous and fun story. Keep writing Sarah! And thank you for sharing.

Couldn't get enough of it!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would because I love listening to Sara Bareilles' music. Her songs always reach out to me in terms of different emotions, in terms of the music as well as lyrics. One of her songs that moved me the most was "She Used to Be Mine" and I am so glad to have heard her expressed her feelings towards that song.

What other book might you compare Sounds Like Me to and why?

Milder version of Mindy Kaling but better because you get to listen to Sara Bareilles sing in her book!

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Very natural narration with her stories and the way she sings the songs in the audiobook. It's like I'm listening to Sara talking on the phone with me!

A Very Honest Sara Bareilles

I absolutely loved listening to Sara tell her stories in what felt like a candid and genuine way. Hearing her sing the accapella versions of her songs was amazing and I couldn’t help but feel genuinely close to her.

AMAZING
