The omnibus edition of Prepper's Crucible is a compilation of the first three books of the series. It begins when our group of preppers flee Phoenix, Arizona, in route to their ranch in Prescott, in the wake of an EMP that wipes out all power, transportation, and telecommunications networks. Once there, they hunker down until the threat of violence forces them to defend themselves and their neighbors. In a series of battles, culminating with and attack on the town by over 200 gang members, they manage to survive the first month following the EMP.

I enjoyed the books and Kevin Pierce did an amazing job, as usual. Beware the next set of books are narrated by a different narrator and it is intolerable. I couldn’t listen to the second set at all so I am left wondering how it all turned out..

Great Book

First, another stellar narration by Kevin Pierce. He has a perfect style for books in this genre and I'm consistently pleased.

On to the book...I wasn't expecting to pick up another Bobby Andrews novel so soon after the last one (which just didn't quite cut it for me), but because an opportunity to listen to Omnibus 4-6 in this series came up I wanted to listen to the first Omnibus beforehand. I'm glad I did, I was pleasantly surprised.

Although I did find some of the mediocre chemistry I was expecting based on my last Andrews experience, it wasn't as evident through most of this book. Furthermore, Prepper's Crucible hit an itch I have for descriptive, day to day life in the aftermath of the EOTWAWKI event. I like to hear details about the homestead, the procedures, the gear, the garden, etc - not necessarily TOO much detail though. I really enjoyed both One Second After and the Founders Series (Patriots, Survivors, etc) and I felt like Prepper's Crucible fell comfortably somewhere between these with a good balanced detail without going over every glistening nook and cranny of every single piece of survival gear coupled with plenty of community development.

There were some editing issues, but nothing bad enough to deter from the enjoyment of the book. Also, some of that lack of motivation or completeness in decision making I found with Andrews previously is still showing up here, just not as badly. I would definitely have liked to see more development and more content in some scenarios. For example key conflict/battle scenes lasting only a few sentences, warranting even less or similar detail as warming up and sharing beef stew. Why? Also some of the decision making or discussions that should have elicited much thought-provoking conversation or at least inner turmoil and emotion were written with a level of stoicism that didn't really match the characters or the groups. Another case where, without a doubt, this would have been pushing a 5 star listen for me if the content was more developed.

All in all this was a fun listen however and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I notice that Pierce is no longer narrating though, it's Mark Shumka; he will definitely have his work cut out for him!

Glad I gave Bobby Andrews a second try

This was a great book and I enjoyed the story very much. I was glad I did not have to read it in segments. That would have really taken away from the momentum of the story. The characters are believable and well developed. The narrator was great and represented the voices with the characters well. I recommend giving this book a try. I felt it was money well spent.

Very good book

What other book might you compare Prepper's Crucible. Omnibus: An EMP Tale to and why?

This was my first EMP tale but I enjoy end of the world tales in general. The Stand is probably the best I have read but I have also enjoyed the Left Behind Series and most recently The Days of Noah was a really good one.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narration of this story I am sure many will complain about as being very dry and monotone however I thought the reading fit the story well other than a couple places where the voices did not seem to match.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I thought this was a good story that held my interest throughout however there were some places where I questioned the story line where the author appeared to be filling out the story for no apparent reason. I often found myself anticipating what was coming next... as in "I know what is coming" but in every instance the author did not go the expected direction. This was disconcerting at times as there seemed to be an obvious buildup to... nothing... then the story just continued on as if there was no buildup.

Any additional comments?

I expected this to be a complete story but found at the end that there MUST be more coming. There are unfinished events at the end of the book. Can't wait for the next one to see what happens next! ...

What made the experience of listening to Prepper's Crucible. Omnibus: An EMP Tale the most enjoyable?

It was a good true to life story and the narration was great!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Prepper's Crucible. Omnibus: An EMP Tale?

The beginning and the end...I want to continue this series, but they switched narrators...why would you do that when you have such a great one already?

Which scene was your favorite?

When they Met Cory and went back and got him, and then invited his family to join them.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

This would make an interesting movie.

** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **

I live in Az so this hits really close to home for me! This is a true to life very realistic fictitious story about an EMP attack...We have a group of friends who have been slowly preparing for this and are almost 100% ready when the world goes to hell...this is book 1-3...and I would love to continue the series...but they switched narrators...and I hate when that happens..Why switch narrators when you have an awesome one already!! Kevin Pierce is as awesome as it gets when it comes to this genre and he did an excellent job with this story!

I RECOMMEND!!!

A GOOD PREPPER STORY WITH GREAT NARRATION!
