Publisher's summary

He thought he was prepared. He thought his family was safe. He was wrong.

Five years after a pneumonic plague killed two-thirds of the world's population, army veteran Marcus Battle is isolated. He's alone with his guns, his food, and the graves of his wife and child. Unaware of the chaos that's befallen everything outside of his central Texas ranch land, Marcus lives a Spartan life. If anyone steps onto his property, he shoots first and never asks questions. But when a woman in distress, chased by marauders, seeks asylum, Marcus has a decision to make. Does he throw her to the wolves to protect himself, or does he help her and leave the shelter and protection of home?

One man, his home, his rules.

Marcus Battle was a prepper, he wasn’t sure what was going to happen, but he knew something was going to happen sometime soon. He was prepared for almost anything, but when the pneumonic plague started to breakout in the US, he could only be so prepared. After nearly losing everything, the only thing that Battle had left was his home. The home that he prepped with his wife and son. The home that he needed to protect against anyone or anything.

Narration was done by Kevin Pierce, and I knew I’d listened to another book he narrated — once I looked it up I laughed. It was another prepper tale. He really has the perfect voice of a prepper, especially one that has a military background. Pierce just allows for the perfect flawed main character to shine strong (that and really good writing on Abrahams’ part).

The funniest thing about this book to me is that it wasn’t toted as being a bio-thriller. The name “plague” wasn’t in it, there were no biohazard symbols on the cover, and yet the scourge that was taking over and killing people was better documented than in most of the books I’ve read lately. Seriously, I wouldn’t in any way describe this as a bio-thriller, but it has elements of it.

Battle was an interesting main character and protagonist. There were things that he would say or do that could or would turn off most people from liking him if you didn’t understand his story. But the way Abrahams would flip back and forth from backstory to present day made the story really fall together. Honestly when an author flips so much it’s usually hard to follow but this really helped make a “simple” story come to life. Yes, its about a man surviving on his land by his terms, but it was so much more.

Overall, this was a really enjoyable story. I found myself wanting to sit in my car longer to hear just a little more, or staying up a little too late. Abrahams has a way of keeping the readers hanging on every word. This finished, and I really wanted more. But at the same time it was the perfect, the story arc was complete with room to add more in the next book.

Another thing that I noticed was that a lot of prepper books feel like they have an agenda. Either trying to see things the way they do, or promoting a certain political party. This book was different. It was written as a post-apocalyptic and dystopian novel first, with a little bit of prepper mentality sprinkled in.

Now, I have to wait until the next book is on audiobook and hope that Kevin Pierce narrates it.

Great post-apocalyptic book without the propaganda

Great book with lots of action. And best of all, it wasn't loaded with all the paranoid, political nonsense some of the books are plagued with. It was just plain enjoyable and I can't wait for the next book in the series!

I'm looking forward to the next volume

This was an enjoyable book. I found myself wanting to keep listening straight through and repositioning my day so that I could maximize my time with this book.

Kevin Pierce was a great narrator. He really allowed me to fully engulf my thoughts with the story.

I like apocalyptic prepper adventures and this one was a pleasure to read. The main character was a realistic character that I could relate. He was genuine although not always the brightest bulb in the chandelier. That probably made him more endearing to me.

I enjoyed that we got to hang out with the "bad guys" a bit and get some background about their motivations. I wish the woman hadn't seemed so helpless. If she had survived for 5 years you'd think she'd know a little basic survival. Like how to shoot and hunt.

The flashbacks into the past were done well and not confusing. So often with flashbacks, I have to pause a second but these were well defined. I loved that it was on a farm out in the middle of nowhere. Almost untouched by the "scourge".

I'm hopeful that I don't have to wait too long for the next volume to be finished. This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review

Excellent writing!

Where does Home - A Post Apocalyptic/Dystopian Adventure rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I love prepper PA novels. This one is very good. Very well written, very good character developement, very easy to follow. I am not crazy about the books where the main character is an over the top prepper beforeTEOTWAWKI, but it was still good. Too short of a story, but the price for the ebook and audio combined was easily worth it.

What other book might you compare Home - A Post Apocalyptic/Dystopian Adventure to and why?

This compares well with the better PA books.

What does Kevin Pierce bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Pierce is not as enjoyable as George Guidall or Dick Hill but he does a GREAT job!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

NA

Any additional comments?

Look forward to many more by this author. Hopefully longer novels!

I'm in. definitely listening to book 2

I enjoyed the story and I'm interested in the fate of the characters. Narrator fits the story very well.

Im not a huge fan of the overly religious parts, but I'm not the author and it's not my story to tell.

Overall I find it an intriguing (albeit slightly predictable) post apocalyptic story and I'm looking fwd to more.

An Absolutely Great Story with deep background

Unlike so many book of this which is a result a plague and the collapse of civilization, the detail and care the Author invested in building a world around the protagonist. It is textured and believable.
But this story will haunt you, it is so possible especially in these times and in the divided world we live in. A must listen.

What would you do to protect your home?

Despite being a prepper and thinking him and his family are ready for anything, Battles life is devastated when the pneumonic plague called The Scourge hits. He loses everything he holds dear and now protects the only thing he has, his home. But even now, his home is under treat when a woman turns up unexpectedly and looks for help. He knows nothing of the outside world so is shocked that mafia style rulers are ruling the area and they aren't happy that one of their servants has gone missing. Can Battle survive and protect all he has left?

I have to say that I loved this and absolutely flew through it. I loved the way it's told in both present format with snippets of the past. We really get a feel of who Battle is and how he came to be the way he is. He has prepared his whole life for something to happen, and while he is ready by being totally off the grid and self sufficient, he isn't ready for a plague to come and his wife to make one mistake! My heart broke for him by what he has been through, but he still has so much spirit and spunk left in him, that its hard not to like him! He is totally like Rambo ;)

The plot of this was fairly fast paced and absolutely entertaining. The idea of the prepper being prepared but being able to do nothing about the plague was unique and refreshing. Usually all these books have a common theme but I liked that the author used the plague coming back rather than making a new, never before seen virus. Also, Battle was totally and utterly kick ass!

In all, this was a quick and addictive read and I can't wait for the next one!! Give it a go, you won't regret it.

Kevin Pierce has once again nailed his performance. I've said it a few times now, but he has such a perfect voice for this type of book. He is easy to listen to and quickly grabs your attention and is a narrator I know will always deliver.
