Calista Langley operates an exclusive "introduction" agency in Victorian London, catering to respectable ladies and gentlemen who find themselves alone in the world. But now a dangerously obsessed individual has begun sending her trinkets and gifts suitable only for those in deepest mourning - a black mirror, a funeral wreath, a ring set with black jet stone. Each is engraved with her initials.

Desperate for help and fearing that the police will be of no assistance, Calista turns to Trent Hastings, a reclusive author of popular crime novels. Believing that Calista may be taking advantage of his lonely sister, who has become one of her clients, Trent doesn't trust her. Scarred by his past, he's learned to keep his emotions at bay, even as an instant attraction threatens his resolve. But as Trent and Calista comb through files of rejected clients in hopes of identifying her tormentor, it becomes clear that the danger may be coming from Calista's own secret past - and that only her death will satisfy the stalker....

I'm a fan of the "Amanda Quick" novels on the whole. However, this one just left me rather flat. The storyline itself was good and I believe this could have been a good book but it is missing something. I really wish I could with specificity describe exactly what's wrong with it however, the only word that comes to mind is "flat".

it's okay.

I enjoy the recorded books. Hearing the story acted out (so to speak) gives the story something extra.
The two main characters played together nicely and additional characters meshed as well.
I liked the story. My all time favorites are her earlier works. Her one name titles. I like the fact that her ladies are progressive thinkers and they get a chance to shine. Keep in mind this is AQ's world, and we are her invited guest. I say enjoy the ride!

A fun story

This romance- mystery novel is predictable but well- written and will good narration. I didn’t mind it being predictable. Regency romance- mystery is often predictable and frankly, being predictable is one of the reasons it is enjoyed. The narrator does a nice job with character voices and has a pleasant voice to listen too.

Well written, great narration

I’m a huge fan of Amanda Quick’s historical mysteries. My biggest dislikes is that there is rarely sequels to her novels. In this book just when you think you’ve nailed down at least the main suspects, Ms. Quick throws you for a loop. I really like that she never leaves you says “uh?” at the end.
I gave this book 5 stars in Overall because her two main character Calista and Trent are pretty well rounded characters, with the supporting characters of Eudora and Andrew their siblings who are constantly the catalyst for the reader getting a peek at Calista and Trent’s past. I also felt excited to get back to the book whenever I could.
I gave the book 5 stars in performance because Louise Jane Underwood does a superb job of making each character voice distinct as well as keeping the level of tense throughout the book at the right intensity, making me want to return to the book.
Lastly I would recommend this book mostly to my girlfriends who enjoy period mysteries.
