A revealing, courageous, fascinating, and funny account of the author's experiment with microdoses of LSD in an effort to treat a debilitating mood disorder, of her quest to understand a misunderstood drug, and of her search for a really good day.

When a small vial arrives in her mailbox from "Lewis Carroll", Ayelet Waldman is at a low point. Her mood storms have become intolerably severe; she has tried nearly every medication possible; her husband and children are suffering with her. So she opens the vial, places two drops on her tongue, and joins the ranks of an underground but increasingly vocal group of scientists and civilians successfully using therapeutic microdoses of LSD. As Waldman charts her experience over the course of a month - bursts of productivity, sleepless nights, a newfound sense of equanimity - she also explores the history and mythology of LSD, the cutting-edge research into the drug, and the byzantine policies that control it. Drawing on her experience as a federal public defender and as the mother of teenagers and her research into the therapeutic value of psychedelics, Waldman has produced a book that is eye-opening, often hilarious, and utterly enthralling.

Critic reviews

"Ayelet Waldman gives an animated performance.... The audiobook blends history, science, and memoir, and, as narrator, Waldman displays enthusiasm for all of it. She uses pacing, pauses, and changes in tone to enliven even the most mundane details.... Her story will appeal to listeners who enjoy quirky memoirs." ( AudioFile)

It will be interesting to see where this goes. I'm glad Ayelet wrote about her experience, and appreciate that she is obviously intelligent and did her homework. This is a well-narrated, forthright account that was convincing in removing much of my initial skepticism.

Ayelet Waldman is so relatable in this book about her self-experiment with LSD Microdosing. The issues she is trying to tackle, psychological and behavioral, sound very familiar to me, and the way the book is written, interspersing her experiment observations with sections on science, drug policy, and social issues, keep the book zipping along and interesting. Her narration is funny and honest, and I enjoyed this book tremendously.

This is a fantastic jumping off point to truly discovering yourself if you are willing to take the leap. Ayelet is very brave to share her experiences so honestly in a society that loves to hang on to conventional wisdom with a death grip even when faced with the likely possibility of being completely wrong. I want to experience life to the fullest. I have been on my own journey of awakening which has lead me to this book. I feel invigorated to dig deeper into self discovery.
Thanks Ayelet!

If you want to actually live while you are alive you might want to read this book.

I loved this book. Ms. Waldman has a great writing style and, I think it took a great deal of courage to write this book. I’m so glad she did. I sometimes feel so alone on my journey. Turns out, I’m not alone I’m feeling the way I do about many of the ideas she writes about. That in itself is a blessing.

I Los live the window into her creative process, as well as how she copes with parenting teens. It’s a wonderful, empowering work for many of us out here struggling with depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and raising children in this age of so many choices.

Very resonant, very entertaining, super informative
