Lightning flashes. Another child disappears....

When Zorka Circus performs, its big top roars with laughter and cheers, but when it moves on, children vanish from the European towns it leaves behind.

Circus security chief Rurik suspects a killer hides among the international performers, but they close ranks - they've always viewed lightning-scarred Rurik as the monster. Nevertheless, he's determined to find the culprit and stop them before anyone else dies and the only place he can call home is ripped apart by the murders.

Into Zorka Circus comes the Skomori clan, despised as gravediggers and ghoulish bloodwalkers. A one-day truce allows bloodwalker Sylvie to marry. Instead, she finds a body. Alerting others will defy her clan's strict rules, break the truce, and leave her an outcast.

When more bodies turn up, the killer's trail becomes impossible to ignore. Rurik and Sylvie must follow the clues - even if they lead to something unimaginable.

There are so many things I enjoyed about this story. An unlikely hero for one thing. He’s an outcast & damaged but regardless of his outward scars he’s loyal to his family of circus performers, at least most of them. I also thought it was well written with plenty of creepiness, gore & suspense.
IMO it was unpredictable. There were many plot twists that I didn’t see coming. This story was so intriguing I couldn’t stop listening. Jonathan Waters, once again performs these characters brilliantly. His female voice is one of the best IMO.
This book actually does have an HEA for which I was grateful for.
I highly recommend this book!

This was not the same kind of paranormal reads I normally go for but I found it quite intriguing. The introduction is the most important part but you really need to pay attention to all of it because everything seems to have played a part in the little details. I usually consider myself pretty good with attention to detail but the closer I got to the end and thought back on some of what they were recollecting, I realized I may have missed a few important details. At least realizing after the fact that they were important. I may go back and listen to this one again in order to put it all together. I really loved the main character, including all of his flaws. I loved the fact he wouldn't give up until he found out who was doing it regardless of who it was, even though they all considered each other family in the circus. He knew it was wrong and wanted to save the children from getting hurt. Then there was the wedding, out of the blue, but that was important information about the history of their kind. And the woman who married them, all key things to pay attention to.

The narrator did an excellent job with all the different characters, and there were a lot.

Definitely going to have to listen to this one again. However, well worth it.

Quite Different

Everything about this book was right up my ally, only problem was, I never really got engaged. I had a really hard time connecting with any of the characters and about half way through really just didn't care what was happening. I think part of the issue is that it felt like a really slow start that just couldn't hook me. I made it all the way to the end hoping for something that would change my mind , although that never happened. The world that L.X. Cain created was perfect and really should have resonated with me. I hope that I am in the minority here because this story seemed like it should have been a 5 star review from me. Jonatan Waters did a great job with the narration. I loved his accents and character voices, yet it just wasn't enough to get me excited about the story. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
