Douglas Brinkley takes us on the incredible journey of the United States - a nation formed from a vast countryside on whose fringes 13 small British colonies fought for their freedom, then established a democratic nation that spanned the continent and went on to become a world power. This book will be treasured by anyone interested in the story of America.

Expected more from this great historian but informative none the less. Author's reading hard to stay engrossed in.

Basic information somewhat of a let down.

Author is clearly left-leaning/progressive, as can easily be seen in his opinions and explanations in the later chapters and of the more recent events. This is fine, however, his opinionated views of certain events comes out in a number of places in the second half of the book, especially cold war and beyond. That said, the first half is quite well done.

a bit tilted, but a strong overall compendium

This book is well worth listening to, and keeps the story of America interesting and engaging, with many observations which help a person more fully understand the reasons behind our momentous history, as well as giving us a more compassionate view of the mistakes made by our very human leaders.

A very well written and recorded book.

I really liked this book. I have been studying a lot of American History lately and this book will dig down a bit further. I previously read Rise to Globalism (Stephen Ambrose and Douglas Brinkley) and therefore had high expectations. This book did not disappoint.

I recommend this book to anybody who endeavors to take a first shot a learning American history or who has studied American History before who wants to get a bit more value.

This book is well worth it!

Great review of American history and a bit more
