Thomas Jennings arrives to his newly acquired estate to find that his steward has fled under a cloud of scandal, and the property has been held together by Miss Loris Tanner, the steward's daughter. Thomas knows what it's like to not fit in, and he's pragmatic enough to respect results, so he gives Loris a chance to maintain her position in a profession uniformly undertaken by men.

Thomas learns about the complexities of estate management from his unlikely tutor, despite somebody's attempts to drive him off his own land. Mishaps turn into near tragedies, while between Thomas and Loris, respect and liking grow into attraction. Who is sabotaging Thomas's estate, and what choices will Loris face when the malefactor has been revealed? Contains mature themes.

As usual, Grace Burrowes delivers an entertaining HEA historical romance. Thomas and Loris are somewhat different characters as Thomas is not the standard arrogant nobleman and Loris is not the standard damsel in distress. Supporting characters have their own unique personalities and do not muddy the novel with senseless "walk-ons." Slight caution: beware the story has some strong sensuality. As narrator, James Langton provides drama and clarity between voices -- just wish he could do women just a bit better (the screechy, whiney tone at times is off-putting).

Well written

Bias alert - I'm already a Grace Burrowes fan and this was one of my early purchases in paper. So I questioned buying the audiobook. SO glad I did!

James Langton adds a whole layer of depth to the characters. Picks up the voices I thought the characters might have in my head and makes them totally come alive. Totally loses me in the story so that I'm barely aware of anything else.

This is a repeat listen for me. No stereotypical characters here. Very flawed, very human and very addictive people. I felt like I was immersed in family, watching things play out.

One of the best authors writing enhanced by one of the best narrators out there. So long as Burrowes is writing and Langton is narrating, these are immediate must buys for me.

If you haven't experienced the bliss of listening to (or reading) one of Burrowe's books, you need to. These make you want to listen again and again. They never get old and I always come away feeling like I've spent time with old friends.

Adds a whole new layer to the paper book

If only Grace Burrows could create men for all women! Her heroes are multi dimensional and able to express their feelings. I realize that a woman is putting the words in their mouths, but it is lovely. As always, a good story with such dense and detailed dialogue. I am not thrilled with the feminine voice of the narrator, but he is still a good narrator. I would love for these books to have two narrators - male and female.

As always, the beautiful dialog!

The story is interesting. The characters are well developed & likable. However, it is not an easy read because you MUST pay attention as there are several jumps to different unrelated scenes, flashbacks, and reflections that are stuck into odd moments. I was confused often and had to replay or just hope things would be explained later.

Additionally, there are many dear friendships, family relationships & romance. The sexy scenes are intelligent, full of desire, but not crude.

The narration is very good, but at times, it is hard to tell if the dialog is internal or actually part of a conversation.

Interesting but not an easy read

You go Grace Burrowes!!!

If you enjoy Stephanie Laurens books... Grace Burrows style of writing is similiar... The narrator, James Langton is absolute pefection...he brings such charm to each character which gave them separation & life throughout this book...

I love a good mystery that has a solid foundation with a love match that grows throughout the story...

If you are like me & do not like a story where there is a long drawn-out disruption between characters that recognize they are in love... a mystery that has an over the top villian... & don't deal well with women portrayed as puppets... YOU will LOVE this book!!!

I found this book to have just enough romance, mystery, strong female personas & quick solutions... and the characters easily relatable & formed attachments to them throughout the book so I couldn't stop listening... A+++

Yes!!!! A+++!!!
