J. P. Beaumont’s latest investigation strikes too close to home in this riveting mystery from New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance.

Be careful what you wish for . . .

Before he retired, J. P. Beaumont had looked forward to having his days all to himself. But too much free time doesn’t suit a man used to brushing close to danger. When his longtime nemesis, retired Seattle crime reporter Maxwell Cole, dies in what’s officially deemed to be an accidental fire, Beau is astonished to be dragged into the investigation at the request of none other than the deceased victim himself. In the process Beau learns that just because a long-ago case was solved doesn’t mean it’s over.

Caught up in a situation where old actions and grudges can hold dangerous consequences in the present, Beau is forced to operate outside the familiar world of law enforcement. While seeking justice for his frenemy and healing for a long fractured family, he comes face to face with an implacable enemy who has spent decades hiding in plain sight.

Great as always. J.A. almost never disappoints. Interesting and satiisflying. Great that a woman author could write about a man in law enforcement.

Great

The story was a typically good JA Jance. Good plot, good twists. Vocal performance was quite annoying in that emphasis would be placed on the wrong word in a sentence as if the performer was reading it cold. He used a somewhat sarcastic sing-song voice for the main character and at times it would bleed over to the other characters as well. Then at one point in the middle of the book he read it all straight, no sarcasm or sing song, for several chapters. I was beginning to wonder if they had changed performers and then all of a sudden the sarcasm was back. Weird. I have read approximately 15 of the JP Beaumont series so I guess I have a firm idea of his voice in my head and sarcastic sing song is not it.

Good story. Vocal performance so so.

The narrator was not necessarily bad but just changed Beau's personality from a grizzled detective to a almost whiny one.

Miss Eugene's narration.

As always the J P Beaumont stories continue to be riveting. Always am sad to have them end! Very well written AND narrated.
