Publisher's summary

From Barbara Kingsolver, the acclaimed author of Flight Behavior, The Lacuna, The Bean Trees, and other modern classics, Animal Dreams is a passionate and complex novel about love, forgiveness, and one woman's struggle to find her place in the world.

At the end of her rope, Codi Noline returns to her Arizona home to face her ailing father, with whom she has a difficult, distant relationship. There she meets handsome Apache trainman Loyd Peregrina, who tells her, "If you want sweet dreams, you've got to live a sweet life."

Filled with lyrical writing, Native American legends, a tender love story, and Codi's quest for identity, Animal Dreams is literary fiction at its very best.

A Lovely Listen!

"Animal Dreams" is a long time favorite. listening to the author read it was an absolute joy. Her beautiful, melodic voice is a perfect fit I'm very pleased that she is recording her books now and I will enjoy them all over again. Not to mention her newer works, like "Unsheltered"

Another perfect book

Absolutely love Barbra Kingsolver! I've just listened to 4 of her books and the last 2 she performed amazingly! My daughter told me about her and I'm so glad she did. They all have great stories with hints of how we are killing Mother Earth built into them in a way that even a person that thinks the earth is here for us to abuse can even sit back and say hummmm. Quote (Where do you go when you've pissed in every corner of your playground)

Uplifting

I read this book twenty years ago and came back to it this winter. Kingsolver writes so deftly about nature, relationships, human frailty, and hope. And she does a wonderful reading here, taking her audience into Cody’s world with generous familiarity. This is a haunting, lovely story.

It destroyed me in all the best ways.

This is a book that you Feel. I felt the culture, people, love, loss, mourning, confusion and passion. What an amazing story - a story that pulled me in. I cried a lot and I’m fine with that. It was narrated by the author- what a gift.

A Complex and Sweet Story

I knew that Barbara Kingsolver was a great story teller when I listened to “The Bean Tree” (and I’ve re-listened to that story many times)!
Animal Dreams is another story that I will listen to many times. The plot, while at first seeming disjointed, is simply a matter of the author’s gift of weaving many stories together then masterfully creating one complete story!
I enjoyed this book and recommend it highly!

Loved the book

I love to hear Barbara Kingsolver’s books in her own voice. I believe We see the wonderful characters more clearly as she envisions them.

The author’s voice

I loved hearing the author read this book. Sometimes when I listen to books, I wonder if the author intended something to come across the way the narrator read it. Listening to this book felt more true for knowing I was hearing the author’s voice.

increasing narration speed improved my listening

Had to use 1.75x-1.80× for narrator (I always speed up narrators but usually 1.25x-1.50) but after I felt her tone and storytelling via narration improved.

I loved the story and characters and setting and definitely cried.
