Corinne LaMer defeated the wicked jumbie Severine months ago, but things haven't exactly gone back to normal in her Caribbean island home. Everyone knows Corinne is half-jumbie, and many of her neighbors treat her with mistrust. When local children begin to go missing, snatched from the beach and vanishing into wells, suspicious eyes turn to Corinne.

To rescue the missing children and clear her own name, Corinne goes deep into the ocean to find Mama D'Leau, the dangerous jumbie who rules the sea. But Mama D'Leau's help comes with a price. Corinne and her friends Dru, Bouki, and Malik must travel with mermaids across the ocean to the shores of Ghana to fetch a powerful object for Mama D'Leau. The only thing more perilous than Corinne's adventures across the sea is the foe that waits for her back home.

With its action-packed storytelling, diverse characters, and inventive twists on Caribbean and West African mythology and fairytales, Rise of the Jumbies will appeal to listeners of A Snicker of Magic, A Tale Dark and Grimm, and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.

Even though this series is for children, as a young at heart adult! It was a true delight! The lessons in the series are not just applicable for children, adults can remember some important things about how we treat or mistreat each other often. And of course the narration was superb, as always Robin Miles is one of my favorite narrators!!

Loved it! It's rare to have a second book in the series surpass the first but this has done just that. Now I can't wait to read the next one.

Loved This Sequel!

For some reason, I couldn’t leave a review for the first volune of the jumbies… that would have been 4 stars… young adult, childish, maybe - but entertaining and somehow sweet. Downsides are somewhat simple sketches of character and virtually everything being explained and explicitly narrated.

For this volume, it’s 3 stars. At best. Why? Because the book starts off with whole phrases grafted/copied from the first volume, and that would be word-by-word. Problem is that that does not let me expect any surprises, any interesting storylines, any twists. If I had wanted to listen to volume 1 again, I would have done that. I wanted to listen to a volume 2. Tgis also makes me fear that this will go the way of all successful YA series… see the walls of those series - and all the books are the same!

Sorry, not for me!

Young adult, okay… passages copied from first volume
