Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me. Lies. Words destroyed me.
"I'm sorry. She didn't make it."
"Daddy, he can't breathe!"
"There's nothing more we can do for your son."
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me. More lies. Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn't acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.
Two words - that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.
"He's gone."
In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
"Hi. I'm Charlotte Mills."

It's 10 years later and she meets Porter Reese son Travis, only to discover Travis is Lucas. Enter a police investigation, custody concerns, hot heads, lies, lawyers and chaos. Travis is the only one that seems to have a voice of reason among all the adults.
This book with make you laugh, and empathize with all the characters Aly Martinez brings to life. It's unfortunate that kidnapping happens in today's society and with the narration of Nelson Hobbs and Kasha Kensington, makes you feel the pain, and the thought process of all touched by the tragedy. The great thing is, in this story there is a HEA.

This entire series (Darkest Sunrise, Book 1 & Brightest Sunset, Book 2) had suspense, heartbreak, humor, support, jealousy, love and respect woven throughout all characters.
Note on Narration: Kasha Kensington was wonderful and brought life to the female lead and the children's voices. Her take on the male lead wasn't half bad either.
Nelson Hobbs did fantastic! Exactly how I feel the male lead should have sounded. He brought emotion and heartbreak and humor in a way I haven't heard other male narrators do before. Fantastic job!
Loved both books!
