Publisher's summary

Love happens when you least expect it. Dre's life falls into a nice, predictable rhythm and that's the way she likes it. But when an adorable, fashionable 20-something bursts into Dre's flower shop to cancel her wedding order after her fiance's change of heart, Dre finds a distraught young woman on her hands. She doesn't have the heart to shove her out of the shop, so she takes her out for sympathy and tea. The idea of befriending this woman who is clearly her opposite, however, is the last thing on Dre's mind. Kelsey feels awful for canceling the order, but she's sincere when she tells Dre she wants to be friends. When she offers to make up the loss by using Dre's services for a major project at work, Kelsey sees a chance to get to know the woman who represents the life she's always wanted for herself. And as Kelsey gets closer to Dre, she proves to her that they aren't so different. Will Dre take a chance and break out of her comfortable routine to find love in an unexpected place? And will Kelsey finally embrace the life she's always dreamed about? Or will this budding flower of romance be cut short before it blooms?

How to turn a straight girl...

I really enjoyed "Must Love Chickens" from the author. When i saw lori prince narrated another book from the author, I picked it up. Her narration is top notch as always, for the more mature dre and the more child-ish kelsey. Unfortunately, I don't like this story as much. For me, I think it was a bit more about the pacing of the relationship. Kelsey's rich football-quarterback fiance breaks up with her shortly before their wedding. Then the straight girl rebounds onto Dre, and pretty soon they're engaged. The side characters are incredibly side-lined (kelsey's friends, kelsey's fiance, etc). If it annoys you, then you probably wouldn't like the book. However, you can still enjoy the book if you don't take it at face value and instead just try to enjoy the scenes. There are some cute scenes of them, various fluff, and only minor (though contrived) conflicts they face together, and it ends on a happy note.

Perfect love story

What did you like best about this story?

I love that out of dispair came happiness and success in the end

What does Lori Prince bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The several different voice inflections and accents bring the book to life

Any additional comments?

I am a fan of almost all books narrated by Lori Prince and this is one of the first books by Jea Hawkins I’ve listened too and I enjoyed it greatly

Love It!

Jea Hawkins books are wonderful, and Lori Prince has done an excellent job bringing the characters to life for us in Audible. Something About You is based on relatable lesbian characters, Dre and Kelsey are both strong women yet very different their story is believable and interesting. Let’s hope for more from this excellent duo! I highly recommend!

narration good, but story didn't work for me.

Soooo, I wasn't all that fond of this. The fact that the narrator, Lori Prince, did a good job with the narration meant I made it through, but the story left me pretty cold. It's basically a meet cute and some sex scenes. There's some flirting and an attempt to give the story some depth by looking at home the pretty blond is so much more than her appearance would suggest, but since the romance is so rushed none of it really works.

My main issue was elsewhere though. I had some major problems with Kelsey's character. The story begins when her male fiancée cancels the wedding at the last minute and she comes into Dre's flower shop to cancel the flower order and breaks down. Dre offers her some friendly support. Kelsey is obviously presented as straight. Toward the end of the book, she's still referred to as straight. But the reader is never given even a moment in which she considers her identity or sexuality before she aggressively pursues a lesbian relationship. None. If someone goes from identifying as straight to something else, bi-sexual, lesbian, whatever, I would expect there to be at least a moment of, "Oh, I guess I'm not as straight as I thought."

This was al compounded by the fact that Kelsey repeatedly went on about how she'd always wanted to try this or do that. But the things she wanted to experience were basically Dre's life, lesbian lives. It made her feel like she was just playing dress of with Dre's identity, a lesbian identity. I expected it would be the sort of thing she'd later chortle about with her suburban mommy-friends, "That time when I was young and adventurous and dated a woman." It didn't feel serious or real.

All in all, the writing was ok and the narration was good, but the story was uncomfortable at best.

Note: I received a free copy of this audio book, but I chose to listen and review it.

First Impressions

We all form snap impressions of the people we meet. Kelsey’s impression of Dre is a slightly older woman whose generosity knows no bounds. She offers Kelsey a port in the horrible storm the young woman is enduring – after having been dumped by her fiancé a mere week before the wedding. Dre is the florist, and could charge Kelsey for the cancellation, but she’s an empathetic person who sees someone hurting and not only waives the charges, but takes the young woman out for a chocolate croissant.

Dre’s first impression of Kelsey is of a younger blonde bombshell party girl. She’s wearing the current fashions and is clearly trend-savvy. She’s beautiful, even through her tears. And nothing like the sensible Dre. Somehow, though, over tea, Dre gets to see more of the real Kelsey and when the woman comes with a business proposition, Dre takes the chance. The physical attraction is real, for her anyway. And opposites might attract, but why would a woman like Kelsey want someone like Dre? (For the record, thirty-two is not over the hill – I was surprised the author made Dre that young and then stuck her with a staid and dyed-in-the-wool personality.)

The chemistry between the women is palpable and they begin a relationship. I was cheering them all the way because Dre needed some vitality in her life and Kelsey needed a solid friend who wasn’t just a party girl obsessed with butt-stuff (which I guess is a thing…).

I enjoyed this book for its simplicity and yet its heartfelt emotions. I rooted for the women to succeed in their relationship. I embraced the dark moment because I was sure they would come out the other side. I rejoiced in their happiness because they deserved to be together. All in all, it was a wonderful book. I’ve come to expect as much from Jea Hawkins and I was not disappointed.

Lori Prince is the narrator for this book and she did another solid performance. This duo works well together and I’ve enjoyed all their books, especially As Long as Love Lasts. Can’t wait for the next book.

An OK story

This book proves that the narration sometimes makes or breaks a book. I would not have loved it at all if not Lori Prince’s narration. There was not enough drama for me in this book, it was quite predictable. I took it because I loved the first book I listened from Jea Hawkins “must love chicken”
