L'autore inglese di questo romanzo (1870-1922) fu un ufficiale della marina britannica e, in seguito, un rivoluzionario irlandese.

Questa sua opera fu il primo romanzo in cui si parlava di spionaggio e che dette il via ad un nuovo filone (di cui ad esempio "I trentanove gradini" fu un altro rappresentante). Che non ci si immagini un romanzo d'azione alla James Bond; qui l'azione è solo interiore, fatta di speculazioni e tattica, che si muove al ritmo lento delle maree dei mari del nord.

Il romanzo (pubblicato nel 1903) si svolge nell'arcipelago delle isole Frisone e si ispira ad un viaggio in barca a vela effettuato in quella zona proprio dall'autore, e inserisce alcune mappe per la maggiore comprensione da parte del lettore.
