Miranda

Strong-minded, irrepressible Miranda Griscom is content working as a live-in housekeeper for the young Spafford family. Here she is loved and appreciated in contrast to her lonely childhood as an unwanted granddaughter. When a wealthy neighbor proposes marriage so that she can care for his motherless children, she is delighted to show him the door, proud that she is “a free and independent woman who can earn her own living”.

In spite of her own sad beginning, Miranda has always championed the underdog. In her youth she devised a way to thwart the schoolteacher from unfairly giving the neighborhood bad boy a beating. Years later, in a comical plan involving mesmerizing and “ghosts”, she manages to catch the person responsible for the murder that caused her friend to flee the town. The story expands from the small town to include real personages of the mid 19th century: Samuel Morse, inventor of the telegraph; Dr. Marcus Whitman, missionary and blazer of the Oregon Trail. But it is chiefly the story of courageous-hearted, indomitable Miranda, a unique and endearing character.

Excellent story

Too bad, the editors made her edit out of the spiritual details you can see it, but you have to know the answer first look at what Jesus said about forgiveness and praying without ceasing, and you’ll have your answer. Read it with those verses in mind.

Great Story

I listen to a lot of old books because of the simplicity of them and less likelihood of it being crass and vulgar. They characters are well developed and the plots are good. This story is a gem. I love Miranda. She can read people and is very insightful about people and their characters. She has a way of knowing when someone is in trouble and how to help them when they can't see a way out of their tough circumstances. A very faithful friend. To understand Miranda I recommend Marcia Schuyler, Phoebe Deane, then Miranda. You will fall in love with her.

Charming

Like a cross between Anne of Green Gables, Christy and Tom Sawyer. A nice change from all the murder mysteries I usually read. Utterly charming and lovely. Wonderful narration, too.

Always a sweet, interesting story.

Love the simplicity of Livingston's books. Takes me back to a simpler time where people were gracious and had consciences, but trouble was at a turn.
