Ricky France-Lynch had a large crumbling estate, a nine-goal polo handicap, and a beautiful wife who was fair game for anyone with a cheque book. He also had the adoration of fourteen-year-old Perdita MacLeod who couldn’t wait to become a polo player. The polo set were ritzy, and gloriously promiscuous. Perdita was a brat who loved only her horses and Ricky France-Lynch…

With Ricky's obsession to win back his wife, and Perdita's to win both Ricky and a place as a top-class polo player, listeners, get ready to be taken on a wild journey!

Even after enjoying The Rivals, I wasn’t sure I’d like Polo, as I’ve never seen a game of polo or cared about team sports. And yet, the characters and their stories make it all interesting to the point of addictive. It’s mostly new characters, with some of the previous characters playing smaller (yet vital) roles. To some of us, the 80’s don’t seem like The Past, but you do need to read this as you would Ian Fleming, being amused not insulted by some of the outdated ideas and behaviors. I actually find it encouraging that we’ve come so far in my lifetime – I can listen to the words and laugh, just as I would at photos of 80’s hairstyles. Sometimes it is a horrified laughter. What were we thinking? And yet, you can still relate to the troubles and triumphs that seem to remain constant. For example, the difficulties of a working mother of teenage children.

Finally – I’m interested in a team sport!

Amazing

Jilly Cooper novels can be amusing. However, the bitchiness and duplicitousness of some characters in this story is quite off putting. Too many women act as victims of men, which is frustrating. And polo leads to abuse of horses.

The cruelty to horses makes me sick
