Publisher's summary
On a fall evening in Corvallis, Oregon, in 1967, 17-year-old Dick Kitchel, a senior at the high school, disappeared after attending a party. Ten days later, his body was spotted by two children as it floated down the Willamette River. He had been beaten and strangled.
The investigation into his murder played out during one of the most dramatic years in America. Life in Corvallis, a college town, had offered a protective, idyllic life to many. But in 1967 to '68, Vietnam, a presidential campaign, the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert Kennedy, and the murder of Dick Kitchel changed that.
His friends thought his death was ignored because Dick was from the wrong side of the tracks. Police and the district attorney thought they knew who had murdered the boy but never made an arrest. Decades later, a cold-case detective believed he, too, had solved the case. However, once again, justice was elusive.
Now, nearly 50 years later, a classmate, New York Times best-selling author Rebecca Morris, returns to her hometown to write about how the murder changed the town and the lives of Dick Kitchel's friends.

Story
In a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, the shooter, Omar Mateen, murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others. The attack was the deadliest act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in US history and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11. But there’s a story you haven’t heard. The FBI had a secret history with the shooter and his father. To obscure that history, the FBI pushed a false story that the media dutifully carried—that the attacker was a secretly gay Islamist extremist who had chosen to target Pulse and planned the attack for weeks.

Story
For decades, Sandra Brown’s life has been intertwined with someone she has never met: an eleven year-old girl named Moira Anderson – who disappeared from their hometown of Coatbridge, Scotland, in 1957. It became one of the oldest cold cases in Scottish history. Sandra lived just around the corner from Moira. She grew up hearing about the missing girl, whose memory haunted the town. But she never imagined that, one day, she would be the one trying to uncover what happened. Or that her search for answers would reveal secrets and lies so close to home.

Monster stories aren’t just meant to entertain. They’re meant to inform, even educate. Above all, they ask us to question our own humanity. Nowhere is this truer than in stories of serial killers. What are the origins of this monstrous archetype? Why are we so fascinated with such gruesome terror? What do they reveal about our fears and anxieties? Explore these and other questions in Serial Killers: Real and Imagined, where public scholar Emily Zarka looks at the serial-killer trope across history, from murky 17th-century legends to 21st-century true-crime obsessions.

Story
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Story
In weeks after the September 11 attacks, 18-year-old Mansoor Adayfi was kidnapped by Afghan militia and sold to US forces for bounty money. After months of interrogations, he was sent to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as one of its first prisoners. Like the nearly 800 other men imprisoned at Guantanamo, Adayfi didn’t know why he was imprisoned or for how long. He had never seen a skyscraper and couldn’t imagine what the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center looked like, much less how they were destroyed.

In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

In Going Infinite Lewis sets out to answer this question, taking listeners into the mind of Bankman-Fried.

For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Dead in the Water
I enjoyed learning about Dick Kitchel, but felt really sorry for him. Based on the story that was told he seemed more like an outcast and a burden to his family, with his constant fighting with his dad and having to compete with several different sets of step-parents...it seems to me that he might have been trying to get attention, since it sounds like it was lacking in his home environment and while trying to get the attention he needed, caused him not to be such a nice guy. Heck, even the author could not just share the story of this young man, without incorporating her own life and her own issues in the story. If you are doing a story on an individual and their death, then that is what the story needs to be about-not your personal life, parents, eating habits, being a widow multiple times, etc. It really took away from what I thought the true meaning behind writing the book was supposed to be.

Can't decide if it's memoir, history or true crime
This book is difficult to categorize. It's part memoir, part history, and part true crime. It jumps among these genres in a disorganized jumble of seemingly unrelated details. The story lacks cohesiveness. I learned some interesting facts, but did not find the story all that interesting as a whole.
Lee Ann Howlett performed well, although the material did not give her much opportunity to demonstrate her talents.

Hometown Revisited
A Murder in My Hometown
: Rebecca Morris
A true life crime story from 1967. At first I was wondering why the author took off on tangents that had nothing to do with the case. After thinking about it, I assume she was telling us that life moves on. Not my favorite in this genre, but not the worst.
The narration was well done. Lee Ann Howlett give a nice performance.

Intriguing True Crime
I wasn't in the Pacific NW in the late 60's, I was still down south with my parents, being a baby ;) .
I now live in Clark County, WA, a couple dozen miles north of Portland, Oregon, so I now know the area fairly well.
I hadn't heard of this story, and it's so sad and shocking to hear of something like this happening. But, as we know, this kind of thing has happened since the beginning of time. As much as we want the world to be filled with only good, it just keeps going more and more to the dark side.
A lot of other big news was happening in 1967 & 68, and for this to be at the top of the news speaks volumes.
Enjoyed both writing and narration, I think it's a great true crime book :)
