As news reports of the horrific December 2004 tsunami in Asia reached the rest of the world, commentators were quick to seize upon the disaster as proof of either God’s power or God’s nonexistence, asking over and over, How could a good and loving God - if such exists - allow such suffering? In The Doors of the Sea, David Bentley Hart speaks at once to those skeptical of Christian faith and to those who use their Christian faith to rationalize senseless human suffering. He calls both to recognize in the worst catastrophes not the providential will of God but rather the ongoing struggle between the rebellious powers that enslave the world and the God who loves it wholly.

DBH did it again! He dismantles the modern Christian half-reasoning espoused by many a denomination that I have been in and shows that God’s goodness will enfold and conquer all and evil will be revealed for the temporary nothingness that it truly is.

Inspiring and Rigorous

The light of the Christian vision shown and brightened. A must read for anyone who wants to be useful to those who suffer.

This was one of my first audible experiences, and it was a very good one. I was worried the long passages in French and Latin (and non-English references to Hindu religion) would really interrupt the narrator, but he was capable in all the languages in addition to English.

As to Hart’a writing, this book was (and remains) the best Christian approach to the problem of evil I have ever read. Definitely worth a credit.

Fantastic narration and content

Hart brings clarity to the question of why there is evil and suffering in the world. He also powerfully shares how God’s love conquers all.

Hope in the midst of suffering
