“No plan survives contact with the enemy.” An age-old idiom that Clay Sanders knows very well. In this case however, it's surviving contact with the people who are supposed to be on his side: family that can't accept the reality of their new situation, soldiers who follow orders selectively, and "friends" who essentially sell you down the river.

No one ever said the end of the modern world would be boring or uneventful.

Clay has to deal with betrayals, attitude problems, shifting blame, and idealistic natures that all threaten to undermine the long months of preparation for the troubling times they now live in - preparations that cost a fortune and tried to anticipate every need of the small number of people he had planned on living at the Sanders farms, not the growing number of people actually living there thanks to events he can't seem to get control of.

The "Citizen's Committee" is still out there somewhere, there's a nutty "Reverend" working the airwaves into a frenzy, there are disgruntled members of the community sowing discord and strife, apparent rogue nomadic elements of some kind that are raiding any place that still has food or resources, cannibals that are still active in their area, and because of certain betrayals they now have to step up training of every individual on the farm from the age of 16 on up just to be able to protect themselves.

Clay just might have had enough of trying to protect a farm full of people that apparently don't want to be protected, even if a lot of them are his own family.

And then, there's that radio call. . . .

I’ll keep going. Overall I like it. The narrator was initially grating a bit but his voice has grown on me. Maybe it’s intentional. The whole cast of characters are idiots though. Not overall. They are likable and I like how they work instructions and tips into discussion and storyline. These fools though deserve to get wiped out and displaced. They keep talking about the mistakes they made and then doing it again and again and skate by on luck. The old man is a dick. Thinks he’s The Godfather of all. Maybe he is … he owns the place but the one reasonably cautious character, Clay, swings from martyr to child as he defers and pouts constantly. I’ll keep going but if they don’t get their asses waxed and all their shit taken it will be strictly by luck. They keep giving others every possible chance to do them in.

Good but frustrating

do it eventually get through the series but it is getting hard. He starting to just concentrate on all the little tiny niggly details and that irritates me. I will spend the money eventually to finish this, but this is getting annoying I hope that this new development which might be interesting will make things go a little faster on the pace.

and yet more book.

I am a big fan of NC Reed, but this is by far my favorite series. Hands down, this wasn't he best installment yet!
I DID NOT want it to end!
Gotta wait I guess. ;-)

If engineering is your thing i suggest you dont use headphones. The story is great the narration is good (with only a few pronunciation errors) Worth the read.

GREAT STORY, poor engineering.

Best production I've heard! Well written and performed! I've seen reviews complaining about pauses etc in the reading and performance but can't understand them. This whole series has just been GREAT. No complaints here. In fact i wish there were more than 7 books and if there ever are I will be buying those too. NC Reed had outdone himself and that's saying a lot with how much I loved his other book. Much love and appreciation goes out to him and his skill in storytelling. He's the kind of person I'd give anything to meet and will support in his endeavors in the future. Being a disabled vet I can appreciate his accuracy but intentional slight omissions to protect the general populace. Thank you sir... I don't know that you would read these reviews but you are a man to be admired and hope you know that.
