A personal tragedy throws Sonny into a world of cruelty and neglect. Drugged into being the raging beast that all of humanity fears, Sonny finds himself on the run and pursued by authorities with orders to kill on sight.

Without the physical ability to speak to humans, he is forced to rely on wit and guile, as well as the purity of his very nature in order to survive and make it to somewhere safe, a place he might call home. Yet, what is home? That's a question he must answer before he can have any hope of finding it.

This story touched me deeply (not in a gross, book-rape kind of way) and has such a positive message of love and acceptance for all, but while keeping solid boundaries. As a character, Sonny is complex, fun, and full of surprises. I appreciate how the story is told from his point of view as well as from other characters. It gives the book a very balanced feel and makes it more complete. There isn't exactly a cliffhanger at the end, but there's certainly some unfinished business that makes me want the next installment as soon as possible.

Even better than Planet of the Apes!!
