Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson take on the case of Mr Avery Quill, whose daughter has mysteriously disappeared. The investigation has hardly begun when her body is discovered, and Mr Quill is himself murdered in the same manner.

The killer leaves visiting cards emblazoned with the head of the gorgon at the scenes of his crimes, and Holmes connects these to a strange club known as "The One Hundred per Cent Society". He learns little there, except that the members are all outcasts from noble families.

The following morning, a visitor arrives at Baker Street to tell Holmes and Watson that the society has a sinister purpose and that its leader has identified them as an obstacle to his plans which must be removed.

Thus begins a battle with a new and merciless adversary, whose madness and thirst for revenge threaten to bring about the deaths of an apparently unconnected group of people. The great detective pits his skills against an enemy, whose very appearance is uncertain.

Oh, what a twist!

The story begins with what looks like a 'simple' case of a missing girl, but soon it gets a lot darker... and dangerous. The villain seems to have no qualm in taunting Holmes, going to the extreme of stealing the belt of Holmes' dressing-gown and using it to strangle a man.

The plot keeps getting more and more convoluted but in a good way, their opponent is both, brash and smart, and they even manage to fool Sherlock Holmes for a little while! And when the twist is revealed... oh, it's simply fantastic!

Another great book in this series, very recommended for any Holmes and Watson's fan.

A solid second book in the Arthur Hall collection

Arthur Hall's first Sherlock Holmes pastiche "The Demon of the Dusk," was masterful. This follow-up piece, although solid, falls a bit short of the mark. It appears to be two parts stitched together, a device that passably works but lacks the sharpness of its predeccesor. However, it is far superior to many other Sherlock Holmes pastiches on the market now. Narrator Nick Crosby puts in another superior performance, which only strengthens the book.

Challenging Villain

A very interesting story in the style of the original stories. The performance was also enjoyable.

Strange Cover up

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson follow the clues of a Medusa Head; this leads to a group of outcasts, some aristocrats disowned by their families and now to various other disowned people. It provides a cover for a special kind of murderer.
