Activist and journalist Shaun King reflects on the events that made him one of the most prominent social justice leaders of our time and lays out a clear action plan for you to join the fight.

As a leader of the Black Lives Matter movement, Shaun King has become one of the most recognizable and powerful voices on the front lines of civil rights in our time. His commitment to reforming the justice system and making America a more equitable place has brought challenges and triumphs, soaring victories and crushing defeats. Throughout his wide-ranging activism, King’s commentary remains rooted in both exhaustive research and abundant passion.

In Make Change, King offers an inspiring look at the moments that have shaped his life and considers the ways social movements can grow and evolve in this hyper-connected era. He shares stories from his efforts leading the Raise the Age campaign and his work fighting police brutality, while providing a road map for how to stay sane, safe, and motivated even in the worst of political climates. By turns infuriating, inspiring, and educational, Make Change will resonate with those who believe that America can - and must - do better.

Just a couple of chapters in on the just-out “Make Change” by Shaun King and I am riveted. He is compelling. King’s personal story, son of a white woman and a black man in America, very light-skinned, seen as black, set in the violent history of his town, is chilling.

King’s narration is charged yet contained, down-to-earth, highly focused. He connects the dots, more like connecting the wires. King is electrifying; I have to remind myself to breathe.

Nothing theoretical about this; hard-won experience and results.

Electrifying

I know when you’re already stressed about the world reading a book on how to change it may be the last undertaking you want to begin, but for all of you that, like me, have felt completely helpless and hopeless in the face of massive world issues I implore you to give this book a chance. No matter what stage of the process you’re in as an activist, from keyboard warrior to professional picketer, anyone can learn something from this book. I plan on reading it a second time through and taking notes.

My favorite thing was that it’s realistic in how it addresses the average person and how they can make a difference. King doesn’t tell you to just give up everything and get out of your house and on the street with a cardboard sign and start yelling (which is what I swear I was about to do when I picked this book up and if I do that now I’ll be way better prepared to do it more effectively). It explains real actual steps we can take right now to get started down the path to making change for the causes we care about most.
