When Dorothy and her pet dog, Toto, are swept away from their Kansas home, they find themselves in the magical land of Oz where munchkins live, monkeys fly and Wicked Witches rule. In their quest to return home they meet a cast of characters that have become much loved by families since the story was first published in 1900. Dorothy, played by Lydia West (Years and Years) joins the Tin Woodsman, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion as they follow the yellow brick road to find the Wizard, played by Jim Broadbent (The Iron Lady, Moulin Rouge).

In this Audible Original drama, Oz is a real place full of real dangers, and we are introduced to new characters and perils in the journey to the Emerald City to meet the all-powerful Wizard of Oz, who alone may hold the power to grant Dorothy and her new friends’ every wish.

Featuring: David Benson, Jim Broadbent, Margaret Cabourn, Stephen Critchlow, James Dryden, Alix Dunmore, Jack Lane, Jason Nwoga, Lizzie Roper, Dan Starkey and Lydia West.

This is a nice, pretty faithful radio play of L. Frank Baum’s classic children’s book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The book is the genesis of dozens of books in the World of Oz fantasy series. It might be a good enticement for youngsters to enter a literary fantasy world which has enchanted children for many generations. There are numerous, humorous anachronisms in this play which keep it a fun listen for adults, as well. My favorite almost slides by after the Flying Monkeys (SPOILER ALERT) help the protagonist melt the Bad Witch. The head Flying Monkey says, “leave us a good review, would you?”

This was the best children’s story with so many clever and amazing turns in it. It will help people to realize that being a friend and having friends you can rely on does so much more than you can on your own.
