Three strong women make their way in 1950s Canada

English hairdresser, Ethel, is alone after the deaths of her family and her wartime fiancé. Widow and single mother, Alice, bringing up two daughters, receives an unexpected inheritance that will transform her life. War bride, Joan, is mother to three small children with a fourth on the way and money in short supply. All are brought together in a rural Canadian town where they each try to build a future - often in spite of the men in their lives.

Each woman has a different idea of happiness. Will any or all of them achieve it?

It’s a great story, highly recommended. But for me, the narrator’s often high-pitched, piercing voice ruined it for me and I chose to stop listening.

Narrator, Awful

I listened to the 1st 2 books in the series back to back but waited to listen to the 3rd for some time. I think this must be a different narrator and maybe producer because she is not the right fit for this book. There are noticeable changes in character accents throughout that made me wish she hadn't tried accents at all. That and the uneven meter threw me off many times where I had to rewind. The production problem for me was the too long pauses between chapters. I kid you not 43 chapters in, I still would look at my phone to make sure the app hadn't closed they were that long.
The story itself is a very nice and tidy close to the series. overall I am glad I listened.

good story, bad narrator

One guy killed Ethan’s husband, tried to rape Joan, impregnated and left Alice, kidnapped a child, burned a car and a barn, tried to seduce the doctor’s daughter. Everyone else in the book are good people?

I love other books by Clare Flynn and was excited to start the third book in this series. I was sorely disappointed to hear that the narrator was different than the first two books, but decided to give it a try. The narration was so painful to listen to, that I had to end a few chapters in and return the book. Very disappointed. For the part I heard,
