  • John Christie: The Bad Neighbour/Sex Strangler of Notting Hill
    Apr 20 2024

John Christie was a World War 1 and 2 veteran who lived with his wife Ethel in the bottom floor flat of 10 Rillington Place, a low-income apartment building in London’s Notting Hill district. In the 50s, there was a media storm when one of the tenants living in the same building as John, a man named Timothy Evans, was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife and baby daughter - despite claiming innocence. John and his wife were star witnesses in that trial, testifying that their upstairs neighbours, Timothy and his wife, argued constantly and the night before her murder they had heard a loud thud. Timothy was hanged for his crime - and life went back to normal for John and Ethel Christie.

That is - until another tenant of 10 Rillington Place made a horrifying discovery: the bodies of six women hidden in the walls, floors and garden of the building. One of the bodies found was Ethel Christie, John’s wife - leading the police to believe that John Christie had murdered her along with the other women hidden in his flat. This respected war veteran was a serial killer - and what he did to his victims is particularly disturbing.

With this shocking revelation, many wondered if John Christie had also killed Timothy Evan’s wife and baby years prior, meaning they had hanged an innocent man - a grieving husband and father. John Christie would be dubbed the Sex Strangler of Notting Hill - but had he also framed Timothy for murder?

  • Timothy Evans: A Damning Confession and the Bodies in The Wall
    Apr 15 2024

In 1950 Timothy Evans was accused of murdering his wife Beryl, and their baby girl, Geraldine. Timothy, a simple man who couldn’t read or write, lived with his little family in London’s Notting Hill district in the top floor flat. He refuted the accusations, instead claiming that it was actually his downstairs neighbour, John Christie, who killed his wife and daughter during a botched home abortion.

John Christie was a World War 1 and 2 veteran who lived in the ground floor flat with his wife, Ethel. He would serve as the chief prosecutor’s witness during Timothy’s murder trial, where Timothy was ultimately convicted and sentenced to hang. But just three years after Timothy’s execution, a shocking discovery would be made. Bodies would be discovered in the walls and under the floorboards of John’s ground-floor flat.

Had Timothy been telling the truth about his neighbour being the real killer? Was this respected war veteran, John Christie, actually a serial killer, who framed Timothy for murder? And what impact would all of this have on England’s justice system?

  • Lauren Hugelmaier: It Wasn't the Cough Medicine
    Apr 8 2024

In the early morning hours of September 1st, 2017, around 1 am, a North Carolina 911 dispatcher receives a phone call from 29-year-old Matthew Phelps, an aspiring pastor. He says, “I think I killed my wife. I had a dream, and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor…I have blood all over me and there’s a bloody knife on the bed and I think I did it. I can’t believe this.”

Matthew claimed that he had “accidentally” stabbed his wife to death while under the influence of cough medicine. 29-year-old Lauren Hugelmaier lay on their bedroom floor, having been stabbed 123 times. While the medicine that Matthew had taken can cause euphoria, agitation, and even psychoses, would a jury believe it as a defence to murder? Perhaps not, after Matthew’s dark side, history of violence and a secret Instagram account was revealed.
