Beyond Shakespeare

By: Beyond Shakespeare
  • Summary

  • From the earliest drama in English, to the closing of the theatres in 1642, there was a hell of a lot of drama produced - and a lot of it wasn't by Shakespeare. Apart from a few noble exceptions these plays are often passed over, ignored or simply unknown. This podcast presents full audio productions of the plays, fragmentary and extant, that shaped the theatrical world that shaped our dramatic history.

Find out more at yorkplays.ca where there is a host of useful information - and go, if you can. Seriously GO! It's going to be epic!

We mention in the episode the editor of the texts for the cycle, Christina M. Fitzgerald - who we interviewed back in 2019! https://audioboom.com/posts/7297248-discussing-the-york-corpus-christi-play

  • 362: Richard III or, The English Prophet by Samuel Rowley (Fragment)
    Apr 25 2025
It's an interesting double bill episode this week, as we contemplate two pieces of evidence for one or two plays on Richard III. The first element comes from the licencing of a play, the other a reported line from a play. Are they the same play? Impossible to tell, but it helps make this episode a little more substantial.
You can find the source for our text here.
There is also an exposition on the Rowley play at the Lost Plays Database.
