  • Summary

  • Suspect is an investigative series about mislaid justice and the kinds of weighty decisions that detectives, lawyers, and jurors make every day - decisions that, once made, are almost impossible to reverse.

Season 3: Five Shots in the Dark follows Leon Benson, who spent 24 years in an Indiana state prison for the 1998 murder of a young man named Kasey Schoen. His conviction hinged on the testimony of two eyewitnesses – but what if their memories turned out to be wrong? And what if the people who knew what really happened had never been allowed to speak? Suspect Season 3: Five Shots in the Dark is the story of two victims: one murdered, one sentenced to life. Follow host Matt Shaer and attorney Lara Bazelon as they investigate how the justice system failed both Leon and Kasey, and who the real killer might be. Join this unprecedented look inside the attempt to overturn a wrongful conviction and find out if justice will finally be served.

  • Introducing: Suspect
    Aug 17 2021

An apartment complex hosts a big Halloween party with themed rooms and costumed partygoers. By the end of the night one of the party’s hosts is murdered. And the partygoers are the main suspects in the eyes of the police: was it the guy in the devil mask, the guy dressed as Jesus, the bank robber, the construction worker? As a complex investigation winds its way through forensic evidence, witness testimony, DNA, and even a psychic, the police zero in on one suspect in particular -- but why? From Campside Media and Wondery, the makers of Chameleon and the Shrink Next Door, comes SUSPECT. Matthew Shaer and Eric Benson (Over My Dead Body) return to the scene of the crime to uncover what happened, and speak with everyone about a party that still haunts them a decade later. It’s a series about cutting-edge science and mislaid justice, race and policing, and the kinds of weighty choices that cops and prosecutors make every day. Choices that, once made, are difficult to reverse.

Indepth & Eye-opening

Thorough reporting. I'm unsure why a review would say it's opinion, it's clearly not. I heard law enforcement's own interviews.
.
This season was heart breaking. Emanuel & Arpana were both failed by a flawed, biased justice system.

Very well done, interesting from the start

I truly enjoyed this podcast. It covered all the potential suspects, and brought out some of the problems with our judicial system and the possible overuse of dna evidence. You won’t be disappointed.

Outstanding

Despite not having a clear answer to who was responsible for Arpana's death, this podcast is an example of outstanding journalism, research, and storytelling. Very well written and executed.

So infuriating

I'm only on episode 4 but listening to that idiot detective talk about why Emanuel became a suspect had me so angry...what an ignorant, stupid man.

Empathy

I found this to be a really well structured and well told narrative, and I felt empathetic towards all involved. I didn’t feel as though there was any “race spin” but that I was hearing the facts of a tragic story. It left me enraged and haunted.

To the reviewer who commented that they could do without the “narrator’s empathy,” I mean woof. A good narrator would have empathy/connection to the story they are telling. Having increased empathy for one another is the goal, so if you find yourself desiring to hear less of it I would question why that is?
