  • The War On Drugs
    Oct 25 2021
John and Justin welcome guest Brian Brinkman of Osiris Media to talk about The War on Drugs. We do some deeper listening into their first four studio albums in anticipation of their new album I Don't Live Here Anymore coming out on October 29th, 2021.

We talk about the evolution of Adam Granduciel's sound from 2008's Wagonwheel Blues to 2011's Slave Ambient, loudly proclaim the greatness that is 2014's Lost in the Dream, and discuss 2017's major label debut, A Deeper Understanding.

Our theme music is provided by the incredibly talented Thomas Wing. The updated version of Get Into A Better Mood is so great that we include it in full at the end of the episode! Check out his Bandcamp page for more great music:

  • Metallica
    Sep 21 2021
John and Justin explore the first half of Metallica's discography from 1983's debut Kill 'Em All through 1991's self-titled album, AKA the Black album. Combing through the band's glory days with two distinct perspectives (John has been a fan since childhood, Justin has only heard snippets on the radio) yields an interesting conversation about exactly when the band reached the peak of their genre-defining thrash metal sound. Whether you're a jaded veteran or a heavy metal newbie, we think you'll gain a new appreciation for Metallica via our closer consideration of Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, and the Black album.

Theme music (we are still loving the new version) provided by the incredibly talented Thomas Wing. Check out his Bandcamp page for more great music:

    Jul 14 2021
John and Justin welcome guest Jonathan Hart from the Brokedown Podcast and Undermine Podcast to discuss the history, lyrical content, and evolution of the Grateful Dead's Eyes of the World. From its debut year in 1973 to its final performance in 1995, this deeper listening project tracks the twists and turns of the band's musical evolution and their changing personnel through the lens of one of their most beloved tunes.

We include segments from eleven versions of Eyes of the World in this episode. With the exception of the shows from 1989 and 1991, these are from unreleased gigs. Thanks to tapers for the wealth of quality AUD recordings we Deadheads have to choose from.
