Fightmaster, Ego Nwodim, Busy Philipps, Emily Spivey, and Alice Stanley Jr. To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Brilliant Production Want The Sequel!

Flawless production, this is EXACTLY how we should receive narrated content, by professional actors. The storyline well told, gave me the feeling of being in a cinema, yet to imagine the characters. SUPERB.

A Must Listen

This is the first time I have listened to this format and it did not disappoint.
The production was spot on and I only wish it had been longer.
Enjoy!

Great performance.

I love stories like this. I’m a fan of both actors and was pleasantly impressed with the quality of the story and music. I felt like I was involved with the story. Looking forward for next one.

I wanted to like this so bad

I love the idea of this. It's a fantastic idea, and I want to see more of these, which is why it stinks to have to leave this review, but this was not executed well, imo. I understand the need to overemphasize certain sounds, as we lack both visual context and the context that we would get in book format. But I almost didn't make it past the first 20 minutes. If it hadn't been for the fact that I support this venture, that I love the idea, and that I was intrigued by the story, I would have DNF'd it because Kate's performance was so over the top. I love Kate Mara as an actress, too. She's super talented, which is yet another reason why this review bothers me, but I have to be honest in hopes that the feedback is considered.

The way she repeated herself over and over as if she had been interrupted mid sentence every few lines was grating. Like I said, I get the need to emphasize certain aspects of the performance for the listener, but this was too much. Literally, she couldn't say five lines without pausing in the middle of one to repeat herself. There were times when it was called for, but that also happened way too often during conversations where both characters spoke at the same time, then had to both pause and say "you go," "no, it's ok, go ahead," type thing. And she continues that pattern through nearly the entire production even when someone's not interrupting her! Like we get it...she's unsure of herself, but omg, the horse is dead. No need to beat it over and over.

There were also scenes that just didn't really translate well, and it was difficult to understand what was happening, and clarity wasn't really provided in the conversation that followed, so this part of the production needs work as well.

Finally, the story was far too predictable. I suspected during their first conversation together about the nature of the book what was happening, and by the time the building was purchased, I KNEW what was going on for sure. I was hoping I was wrong, but I wasn't. It was the most predictable story I've heard in quite a long time.

I don't feel the need to continue to say negative things, because there were positive things about it. The idea, for one. I adore the idea of audio movies. It's amazing. If you can get past Kate's OTT parts of her performance, the rest of it is good. And I'd recommend a listen to anyone who supports this venture just so that we can get more of these, and compare and appreciate progress that is made as they get better and better. So I don't consider it a total waste. But a less predictable story and a slightly less OTT performance would really have made it an amazing experience.
