  • Fireside Folklore: Nuckelavee, Scotland's Scariest Demon
    Apr 26 2024

We journey to the cold waters of the North Sea for Jenny to tell the famed story of the Nuckelavee as captured by farmer and folklorist Walter Trail Dennison. The nuckelavee is a skinless horse who haunts Orkney’s coasts, terrifying travelers. He also brings blight and plague to crops, livestock and even humans with his terrible toxic breath. Meanwhile, Annie will do anything to avoid the nuckelavee, including summoning the ancient Sea Mither to ensure the nuckelavee is trapped for summer.

  • Bog Bodies: Cladh Hallan to Betty Corrigall
    Apr 15 2024

Annie and Jenny return to their beloved bogs to have a look at human bodies that have been buried and preserved in peat. From Bronze Age mummies, to the Gunnister Man’s unique knitted garments, we examine the human remains and artefacts that have been excavated from bogs. We tell the tragic history of Betty Corrigall, a young woman buried on the boundary between two parishes.

Thanks to Orkney Archives and the National Museum of Scotland for answering some strange questions about bog bodies.

  • Fireside Folklore: Warrior Women
    Mar 23 2024

From the Fortress of Shadows just off the Isle of Skye, to the Palace of Dreams in Arthurian legends, Jenny and Annie visit the homes of warrior women.

Jenny begins with folklore and mythology of Sgàthach, sometimes called the Shadow, or the Striker of Fear, and we learn how she was the greatest teacher of warriors in all the world.

Next, Annie takes us to a strange Arthurian story about a woman of King Arthur’s dreams and how one of the Knights of the Round Table must make an incredible journey to find her.

Between the swooshing weapons of these two warrior women, we look at the strength, strategy and second sight of these incredible legends. Borrowing from the Ulster Cycle of the Irish heroic sagas, and the Scottish Gaelic song Am Bròn Binn, from Dunscaith Castle to the halls of the King of Scotland, these stories still inspire wonder and awe to this day. We hope you enjoy!

Just love the stories

Love, love these two ladies. Their stories are so great and they make them so funny and relatable. Their bantering is great. They seem to have lots of fun making these. I love to re listen to the podcasts as I fall asleep. Sometimes, I just laugh out loud. Must listen to.

Gem of a podcast

Don't listen if you are doing detail painting...
We laughed so much we had to keep painting over.
BUT, DO LISTEN
Annie and Jenny are entertaining and informative.
We are enjoying the folklore, the fun and most of all Scotland.

Simply the most delightful little podcast

Now, I'm not much of one for listening to podcasts that aren't heavy on the fictional narrative. I find they can be draining or hard to listen to. I get easily distracted or ignore them altogether. A lot of the times I find your average podcast, or even a good one made by friends with good chemistry, that they just don't catch my attention. And it's a shame. There are some good podcasts out there that I just know I'll never listen to.

And then there's these two. I don't know how they did it, but there's just something delightful about their podcast. I really enjoy the stories, usually a collection of them on a theme or event or subject. Just a bunch of little bite-sized word-treats told with the best of Scottish sarcasm and humor. I love the mix of history and folklore, it feels like I'm getting little windows into hidden crannies of a culture at once so foreign and yet so familiar.

I could listen to them all day, and I often have.

Ladies, thank you so much for sharing your research and storytelling prowess. I love yous guys.

Great podcast, a whimsical Highland journey

Originally found this podcast on YouTube - I was soo smitten with the hosts and their creative delivery of the stories and history that I hunted them down here on Audible. The host, the stories and the music just feel like home. Great job ladies!

Very binge-worthy!

My wife and I are planning to hike the West Highland Way next summer and I wanted to find a podcast of Scottish history. Jenny and Annie do not disappoint. More than just history they talk about nature, folklore, culture etc. And they do it in a fun and interesting way. We will be binging this podcast on our next road trip.

Love you guys and your stories.

I have listened to all of the podcasts and turned a handful of other people into them.

They are fun real people and great storytelling and banter. They have some great subject matter but their delivery totally makes it.

Totally worth getting the Patreon membership too.
