I spoke with Laura Garcia about the December 17 Nuestro Futuro Conference, organized between the Newburgh Library and Orange County Community College, for Immigrants and Undocumented Families about the cultural misconceptions regarding college education.

In addition, in her column La cultura cura, the teacher of the ancestral cultures of the Anahuac, Anita Campion, told us how to celebrate the Birth of Huitzilopochtli. Anita suggested we do a morning exercise every day until December 21 (the winter solstice) to develop willpower and decision-making power. The exercise consists of writing a list of blessings in a notebook, and writing down why we are grateful for each blessing. Read the list every day and at the end of each item say thank you. Write down five blessings each day, preferably different ones. This gratitude will help us to be happier and will develop our willpower.

We met Noemí Sánchez, regional coordinator for Long Island of the Rural Migrant Ministry, who also spoke to us about the struggles of the first union of farm workers.

In their Dignity for All column, Emma Kreyche and Julie Dragonetti of the Workers' Justice Center told us about the legislative campaigns they plan to launch in 2023 in defense of immigrants in New York. Among the campaigns for 2023 is #excluded no more: which would provide unemployment insurance to an estimated 50,000 people per month who are currently ineligible (such as undocumented immigrants, freelancers and more), for 6 months, in payments of $800 to $1,200. Another campaign is #raiseupNY to raise the minimum wage each year gradually, following the cost of living, with $16 an hour starting in 2024, or depending on the region. The #accesstorep campaign, led by the NY Immigrant Coalition, NYIC, seeks access to legal representation so that immigrants facing deportation have the right to a lawyer. And #ny4all seeks to put an end to the conspiracy between the different local and state police agencies with immigration police and border patrol, such as prohibiting questions about immigration status without a court order. Y #ny4all busca poner fin a la conspiración entre las diferentes agencias de policía local y estatal con la policía de inmigración (la migra) y la patrulla fronteriza, como prohibir preguntas sobre estatus migratorio sin una orden judicial.
