  • Bonus Episode: "The Cloak of Invisibility"
    Apr 1 2022
What does it take to disappear? So-called cloaking technology is common on things like fighter jets, but recent advances at MIT have created flexible "fabric" surfaces capable of bending light. It might sound like Harry Potter hocus pocus, but it’s quite possible, in the next decade, to have clothing that makes the wearer invisible. You go on a trip, and stuff happens. You lose your luggage or miss your plane. But what if the stuff that happens is a little more epic? Like war zone, poisonous snakes, engines-falling-out-of-your-plane kind of epic? Could you roll with that?  Find Show Notes here: https://www.interweave.com/fiber-nation/twisted-tales-of-travel/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, Part 2
    Feb 17 2022
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire lasted fewer than 30 minutes and killed 146 people, most of them young women. The disaster’s aftermath would lead to sweeping labor reforms and workplace safety regulations we still have today. It would transform Democrats into a progressive party. And it would, more than 20 years down the road, help elect Franklin D Roosevelt president, paving the way for the New Deal. Excellent!

These podcasts are fascinating and will probably be interesting to people other than the ones interested in fiber. They are intriguing anecdotes from history that you will never hear anything else. The episodes are very well researched and Allison Korlesky does a great job of narrating them with intelligence and humor. I have yet to find one that wasn't enjoyable. I encourage anyone who comes across this podcast to give it a try. I apologize for any errors I may have made. I'm on my phone and the text is extremely small!

New Follower

I have searched for and tried many podcasts that have the appearance of meeting all my requirements, though not many did! Allison meets all my requirements for a good podcast and more; I am completely hooked. My husband is now listening to them so I have listened to some of the stories multiple times.
Allison has a gift for telling these stories with respect, clarity, confidence and sincere interest. I appreciate that.
Thank you! Thank you for researching and sharing these stories. I very much appreciate learning the history that comes with any fiber craft. It is important to keep this alive while passing it on to future generations.

You Never Know What You Have Until You Lose It

Great story about the history to save a rare breed of sheep that has been around since the Bronze Age. I loved it.

The best part was reminding me that all life is interconnected. If the breed had died out, what other species of life on earth might be affected and lost?

Well told story by multiple narrators. Love their enthusiasm for the topic.

I also love this entire series.

And now, as a compulsive and enthusiastic knitter and spinner, I want to hunt down a skein or two of Manx Loughan wool and at least knit a scarf or a cowl from it.
