Während einer Aufführung von Shakespeares "Wie es euch gefällt" im New Yorker Garrick-Theater verschwindet der Schauspielstar Belinda Belmont spurlos. Die Polizei in Gestalt von Detective-Sergeant Caruso tappt wie üblich im Dunkeln, und auch Professor van Dusen scheint zunächst nicht weiterzuwissen.
