Publisher's summary

With her husband stranded in a war-torn country halfway around the world, a university professor – on whom the burden of managing their small family has suddenly fallen – tries to maintain order at home. Her young daughter seems not to mind, or even really notice, the father’s absence. But as the weeks go on, mounting pressure on the narrator to balance family and work begins to take a toll.

So, when an enterprising and overeager graduate student, known only as “Schpleeven”, begs to “hack” her situation, the narrator gives in and Schpleevan connects her husband’s video calls to a plastic bunny toy.

Darkly funny and eerily prescient, Bunn-O examines technology’s unbelievable ability to connect us, as well as its extraordinary power to tear us apart.

Love in the Time of Telepresence

Bunn-O by Kate Tighe-Pigott is a short, engaging story of a family, a world apart but trying to remain connected through technology. On one side, the husband, a major tech geek enlists the help of grad student to build a telepresence device out of a plastic toy bunny.

The wife (and narrator) of the story is initially on board, but as the weeks and months drag on becomes ever isolated and disillusioned by the whole set up. Pulled in ever more confusing directions, until the final scenes.

Superbly narrated by Emily Bauer, I found her easy to listen to and thoroughly pleasing as the voice of the narrator.

Yes, this is a short review but so was the story at just 50 minutes. Don't let the short timespan put you off though, there's a hell of a lot of story packed in.

I relate !

It was hard for me not to laugh.... then cry. I have actually thought these thoughts. However, I am not courageous enough to point this problem out to my spouse or anyone in particular. Still waiting for human attention. Funny story. I am glad someone wrote it.

too short and too many issues left open ended. needs more effort and some closing thoughts on subjects.

Confused

I enjoyed the story and the narrator did an excellent job but the ending left me completely in the dark. I don’t know what is going on how are you and how it ends.

creepy AI

A great short listen. Tighe-Pigott should feel encouraged to write longer material, or expand this story. Very well done.

Disappointed

The story has an interesting and promising premise, but the character development and their interactions are not synced. It feels like 3/4 of the middle of the story is missing. Sort of like the author just wanted to get to the end fast.

Good start....

I liked the story but I find the ending so unfinished. I am sorry I took the time to listen with such an ending b.

"Bunn-O" -- Five Stars, Begrudgingly

The reader was a perfect match for the first-person voice of the protagonist, exactly how I imagined she would sound. That being said, I didn't exactly love the book.

There was a core of humanity missing from the characters and the plot. This could have been intentional, though, to emphasize the cold and "un-alive" technology that has become a substitute for human interaction. In this manner, I saw the plot as being entirely realistic. It may have been this pervading malaise which caused my discomfort.

I sympathize strongly with the protagonist's internal conflicts. Though I use and depend on technology, I do find it a poor substitute for real communication and community. For example, I would much rather speak to someone in person than over the phone. But, I do depend on texting for it's speed and ease of use.

This book is not about the future, not science fiction, but science at the next step. Perhaps it's already manifested somewhere in tech-intense Japan; or, it's being hard-tested in U.S. military applications.

So, by eliciting such a response from this reader, should I consider the author as having accomplished her goal? Maybe, I should adjust my rating. Maybe not. I do like books that make me think from a different angle, which is true with "Bunn-O," even if I was uncomfortable with the results.

short story

this was a short story. very short. the beginning flowed nicely but the middle and end were choppy and not completely fleshed out so the story had an incomplete feel.

Annoyed

I cannot believe I thought this story would be satisfying. I got the feeling to move on midway I should have done so.
