If you are a singer, you are an athlete. And the athletic skills that make you a great vocalist come from one source: your brain.

The Singing Athlete is the first book of its kind: a view on voice training through the lens of both the physical body and the nervous system. As one of the top teachers of professional Broadway performers, Andrew Byrne has developed a unique synthesis of athletics and neuroscience that will guide you to higher levels of performance.

In addition to his work on Broadway, Andrew is devoted to studying the training methods used by Olympic athletes as a master practitioner of Z-Health functional applied neuroscience. He has taken thousands of hours of research and boiled it down into an easily digestible form that will help you unlock amazing new vocal skills.

When you buy The Singing Athlete, you’re not just picking up a book. You’re getting a complete training system.

Through the audiobook, you will learn to:

  • Breathe correctly for stress reduction and optimal vocal support
  • Exercise your tongue, jaw, and throat in ways that decrease threat in your brain
  • Use your ears and eyes to improve vocal range and stamina
  • Heal any scars that might be holding you back
  • Eliminate reflux, tinnitus, sinus problems, and other vocal stumbling blocks
  • Move better, feel better, and sing better

Fantastic book for serious singers! I’m going to be getting a copy of the print version for further reference and to try all the exercises with my voice teacher, but it’s expensive so I started with audio. The audiobook might have been helped by a pro narrator though the only real issue I had is missing audio. He skips ahead several sentences multiple times, starting in Chapter 7. I wondered at first if it was my phone but it replays and sounds like errors in the recording.

Game Changer for Singers!

I'm confused why this book has 3.4 stars at the time of me writing it. It was well written and explained. I will say since it's science-based that I had some moments where I needed to look up some things about the body and it's functions in order to understand the explanation.

I am a huge believer in how everything we do, how we move is connected to our voice and other talents! It goes well into detail about every aspect of the voice and how it's affected, how you can be more aware about your body and it's patterns to become a better singer.

I do think based on the writing style and approach that it's a great book for vocal coaches like myself to learn and share with others due to it's "big words" approach...but the overall concept of this is very helpful for singers and vocal coaches to understand the mindset of singing isn't just about sounding pretty and feeling great. It goes in depth.

This is the third book about singing I've listened to that doesn't include any actual voice exercises to work with. what is here is a lot of boring intellectuaizing with no visual representation and you're going to forget it all by the end of the book.

there are links to a website which supposedly has a course you can take, but i wanted something that i can work with on the go without trying to download random mp3 files which are a pain to play on my phone.

if you want to actually work on singing, avoid this. it isn't "a game changer" it's basically a guy who doesn't even have a compelling speaking voice (nose sucking noises at the end of every sentence!) who doesn't even teach you how to sing. Refund?

Another book about singing that doesn't teach it

More of a science lecture than a useful tool. I wish I could have sampled a better portion before purchasing.

Boring
