Роман "Дети Арбата" - это размышление Анатолия Рыбакова о судьбе его поколения. Он начал писать его в середине пятидесятых и впервые заявил о нем в 58-м году в "Литературке", отвечая на вопрос новогодней анкеты "Над чем работает писатель". И повторял из года в год в других газетах: "Продолжаю писать "Дети Арбата", действие происходит в тридцатые годы". "….С самых первых шагов мне надо было показать, что я не скрываю, какой пишу роман. Весной 65-го года у меня была готова первая часть "Детей Арбата", и я отнес ее в "Новый мир". Со мной заключили договор, заплатили аванс и анонсировали роман на 67-й год. Но ничего не вышло. "Я прочел рукопись за одни сутки, - сказал мне Твардовский, когда я через какое-то время пришел в редакцию, - от нее невозможно оторваться... Вы нашли свой золотой клад. Этот клад - ваша собственная жизнь...".

I liked the the narrator, the plot, the main line in the novel. If you want to understand the history of The Soviet Union in 1930s, highly recommended.
