Vagamente ispirato ad un fatto reale, e al modello letterario de I dolori del giovane Werther di Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, l'opera risente molto dell'influsso di Vittorio Alfieri, al punto da essere definito "tragedia alfieriana in prosa".
