Where her daughter had played Gretel in front of a cheering audience, only two faint stage lights remained. The theater was deserted and eerily silent; the only sound she could hear was her own heart, pounding in a frenzy against her chest. She rushed outside and stopped sharply at the top of the stairs, stunned, her blood turned to icicles. Darkness had fallen, thick and filled with ocean mist, lampposts like ghosts sprinkling yellow haloes in the sky. Paige was gone. They’d taken her little girl.

The girl: taken.

After eight-year-old Paige disappears without a trace, FBI Special Agent Tess Winnett is called to investigate one of the boldest kidnappings the bureau has seen. The girl was taken from a theater filled with witnesses, in the middle of a children’s play. And no one saw anything.

Starting a frenzied search and following leads that seem to suggest a link to the girl’s father, the state district attorney, Tess is stunned to learn of a ransom call that points to an entirely different motive, old as time itself: money.

The first 24 hours: critical.

Frantic for answers and painfully aware of each passing moment, Tess has a choice to make: trust her instinct and follow the leads that seem to indicate an organized crime connection? Or give in to the demands of the parents and assist with the ransom payment? The odds of finding Paige alive drop with every passing second, and making the wrong choice would seal her fate. Her blood would be on her hands.

I binged the entire Tess Winnet series at the expense of all other available books. But I'd say this was my best. The one that really surprised me. Didn't like Tess at first, but fell in love with her character over time.

Everything.

This story is another masterpiece of suspense that had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. One of the things you know when you pick up a book by Leslie Wolfe is that you will be put through the wringer as she takes us, the listener or reader whichever method you choose to enjoy your books, on a thrilling rollercoaster ride evoking almost every emotion. This one is no exception it's about the abduction of a little girl, Paige who just happens to be the daughter of the D.A.

There's no doubt the operation was well planned and executed, it was a thoroughly professional job leaving almost no clues to the perpetrators. At the D.A's insistence, FBI agent Tess Winnett is put in charge of the operation to find and bring Paige home - hopefully alive.

The Girl They Took is a well-crafted thrilling story full of surprises which I recommend wholeheartedly the narration of this book is by the incredibly talented Gwendolyn Druyor who brings all the characters and the story to life beautifully.

I was given this audiobook as a gift and am voluntarily writing my review.

So Well Crafted

If your reading this then you probably have read the first books in this series. If so, you know how crazy and awesome our favorite federal agent is. In the first book I was trusted with Tess's personality and disregard for other people's feelings. I'm grateful I stayed with the books, because there has been a lot of character growth each book after. This book I did love, but I ended up skipping a couple chapters towards the middle because I did feel like it was a little drawn on. I feel like the story could definitely have been told in 3 to 4 hours... more like a novella. Instead the story was dragged on and filled with a lot of unneeded fluff. Saying that though, I also still think this book should definitely be read, because it is another great story where we see our agent follow her gut, say screw it to the rules, and save lives!!

Gut instinct

Tess never backed down under both the unfair scrutiny of the family and the case.

Relentless

The Girl They Took (Special Agent Tess Winnett #7) was a good read by Leslie Wolfe.Paige was playing Gretel in front of an audience when she was taken. Special Agent Tess Winnett is brought in to find Paige alive. I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more by the author.
