“The powerful origin story of one of Yellowstone’s greatest and most famous wolves.” (Washington Post)

Book one in the Alpha Wolves of Yellowstone series.

Book two, The Reign of Wolf 21, is available now.

Yellowstone National Park was once home to an abundance of wild wolves - but park rangers killed the last of their kind in the 1920s. Decades later, the rangers brought them back, with the first wolves arriving from Canada in 1995.

This is the incredible true story of one of those wolves.

Wolf 8 struggles at first - he is smaller than the other pups and often bullied - but soon, he bonds with an alpha female whose mate was shot. An unusually young alpha male, barely a teenager in human years, Wolf 8 rises to the occasion, hunting skillfully, and even defending his family from the wolf who killed his father. But soon he faces a new opponent: his adopted son, who mates with a violent alpha female. Can Wolf 8 protect his valley without harming his protégé?

“[The Rise of Wolf 8] is a goldmine for information on all aspects of wolf behavior and clearly shows they are clever, smart, and emotional beings.” (Marc Bekoff, Psychology Today)

This book will educate, excite, confound and tell you the story of wolf families as they are literally seen through the eyes of Rick McIntyre. He has recorded their remarkable family ties, kindness, tenacious survival skills and contribution to nature. So much more than a wolf journal. Riveting!

The magic and nature of wolves.

Rick has a unique perspective from observing several wolf packs over the years. He saw family loyalty, playfulness, group feeding the young and how they tracked one another through smell.

I picked this book up on a trip to Yellowstone and downloaded the audiobook as a companion when I couldn’t read the bill.

Great story, but the narrator made it dry on audio. Preferred the book.

Great story, reader was robotic

I loved the story of the underdog growing to become a brave and great alpha in the Rose Creek Pack. In addition the story was told perfectly by the narrator.

Great story told in the best way.

I saw this book at a bookstore, at Yellowstone National Park, last year, but passed on buying it, because I didn't think I would end up "reading it." But several months later, it was offered for a significant discount during one of Audible's sales, and I decided that maybe it would be worth listening to at such a bargain price ($5.99). I'm so happy that I did. The book is excellently written, excellently narrated, and left me wanting more when it ended. The story confirms what many of us already know, intuitively: that animals, especially those that are social like wolves, share many of our emotional and personality traits. Some wolves are selfless and noble, others seemingly cruel bullies (although the book even offers some more nuanced shades of gray as it relates to the "bullies"). I regret living far, far away from Wyoming, otherwise, I would love to track into the back country, regularly, to observe these phenomenal creatures. I'm looking forward to listening to the sequel, regarding Wolf 21.

What a Treat!
