Filled with “fascinating information, original research, and bold ideas” (NPR), a revelatory account of how African Independence was systematically undermined by the US

In 1958 in Accra, Ghana, the Hands Off Africa conference brought together the leading figures of African independence in a public show of political strength and purpose. The charismatic Kwame Nkrumah, who had just won Ghana’s independence, led a determined appeal for Pan-Africanism. Young, idealistic leaders across the continent, as well as African Americans seeking civil rights at home, heeded his call. Yet, a moment that signified a new era of African freedom simultaneously marked a new era of foreign intervention and control.

In White Malice, Susan Williams unearths the CIA’s covert operations from Ghana to the Congo to the UN, which frustrated the attempts of Africa’s new generation of nationalist leaders to establish democratic governance. These revelations dramatically upend the conventional wisdom that African nations failed to establish effective, democratic states on their own accord. As the old European powers moved out, the US moved in.

Drawing on original research and recently declassified documents, Williams introduces readers to idealistic African leaders and to the secret agents, ambassadors, and even presidents who deliberately worked against them, forever altering the future of a continent.

Selfishness and greed has no color. The Greediness of the imperialist (Caucasian) nations seems to know no bounds.
With the help of Greedy and selfish African characters, America, Britain, France, Portugal and Belgium was successful in undermining True Freedom and democracy in Africa.

The West fears the liberation of Black Africans . This has been the case since through luck and timing, they were able to impose their will on the continent, but nothing lasts forever.

This book is packed with great information that will help you understand Africa’s current woes and the hidden/sinister hands of the “Benefactor” nations.

We need more books like this that exposes the West’s dirty linen.

We need more books like this!

I was fascinated by all the information she had on Ghana and the CIA‘s involvement.

It was mindblowing how much info she released in detail.

We may never know the entire truth, but White Malice shines a bright spotlight into the darkness of neocolonialism and the legacy of imperialism.

I had heard of US meddling in the affairs of sovereign nations and even of the US’s killing of democratically elected officials and although I was bothered by knowing those facts, I was never personally affected. This book made the US’s deceit, hypocrisy, and malicious actions personal. The author put color into the black and white narrative of history and made Lumumba and Nkrumah real living men who loved and were loved.

I’m almost in tears thinking about the events detailed here. When people ask “Why can’t African’s or her descendants around the world, get their act together?”, what has always been obvious to me is the colonists willful ignorance and the determined effort of Colonialists to keep things that way. This and many similar books don’t just give life to history. Books such as this remind me of the time that my family was and is killed for simply wanting to enjoy the right that belongs to us all, simply to LIVE.

Bravo to the author. The book is well researched. But, it is a hard read. It is more like a dissertation than a flowing story. Sadly, facts get repeated. Better editing cld have caught that flaw. Author makes a few grand leaps to conclusions from thin data points. This book is not for a beginner in understanding African nationalism of West Africans 1950s to 80s There is overkill on Patrice Lumumba, though his story is vital and critical. Congo and Ghana are not the only hotbeds of CIA hanky-panky in Africa. Almost nothing on Southern African liberation movement leaders and CIA role in maintaining apartheid. Strange to have no mention of Neto in Angola, Machel of Mozambique and Nujoma of Namibia. Still, congrats to the author. Narrator must please learn proper pronunciations of names of famous African leaders.

Informative, sometimes repetitive, good read
