The author, D.K. Dailey weaves an intriguing dystopian story focusing on differences and privilege from the viewpoint of Sonya and Stone. The world-building is graphically expressive and detailed as are the relationships between the characters. The dialogue and emotional responses are realistic and enhance the storyline. The plot twists are well done.
The narrators, Zoleka Vundla and Jonny Unitus provide strong performances capturing the imagination of the listeners. The way the narration is broken up makes listening and following the story easier. Both Vundla and Unitus use their narration skills to further enhance the story by assuming their respective role as if they are the characters they portray. Speaking clearly and with a steady rhythm, the story rolls off their tongues easily.
This is the beginning of a war and is focused on building characters and their role in the world. It is hard to reconcile the drastic differences in the character of Deja from the beginning to the one at the end of this first book. Overall, a good listen for anyone who enjoys dystopian genre books.
