An updated and abridged edition of Richard Baxter’s classic text

Originally written in 1656 and endorsed by generations of leading pastors as an essential book on the work of ministry, this abridged version of The Reformed Pastor presents the best of Richard Baxter’s timeless advice in simple, modern language that’s more accessible to a new generation of church leaders.

In inspiring communications to his fellow ministers, Baxter challenged them to pursue teaching and personal pastoral ministry with an exceptional degree of faithfulness. His words were grounded in the apostle Paul’s encouragement to the leaders in Ephesus to “take heed unto yourselves and all the flock.” Baxter’s advice remains relevant today as Christian leaders face both new and age-old challenges in ministry. With this updated, abridged version of The Reformed Pastor, editor Tim Cooper retains Baxter’s passionate message in a modern, simplified style that speaks clearly to today’s Christian leaders.

It is like reading a pamphlet about the real book. I have read the Reformed Pastor every year for the last five years for encouragement and a focus. Indeed every Christian should read this book and be blessed and challenged in their walk of love and life. If you just need a refresher than this is it. it was good to connect more with the history of Richard Baxter as well.

The most satisfying thing about this book for me is the very final look at the catechism that Richard Baxter would have been using in his church and the beauty and simplicity of that versus some of the catechisms of the present.

Short but satisfying.

This book echoes the exact ideas and Scriptures I have been expounding to the pastors in my life. Absolutely amazing book. Recommended read for all pastors and congregants

Excellent advice from the 17th Century pastor and author Richard Baxter. What a privilege to hear exhortation from one of the champions of the faith, from a movement that changed the Western world and led God to bless it with hundreds of years of unprecedented freedom and prosperity. Well worth listening to.

Wise advice for pastors and those choosing pastors

This book is must for every Pastor to read or listen to. Baxter’s putting others first is a great example of how a true shepherding Pastor is supposed to conduct himself.

Convicting

This book at the very heart of it was poetic, biblical, and intense. Not only were the words impactful, the speakers voice gave gravitas and made each sentence potent. This is a book that every single pastor MUST read, put on the shelf, and listen to it continually. There was soul searching that challenges, with love, the authenticity of our Christian faith if we are not shepherding properly. It's not about managing your title as a pastor, but your role as a protector of God's people. The call for you to look at God, stand up, and bear the role of taking care of God's sheep.
