From New York Times bestselling author Bernard Cornwell, the second installment in the world-renowned Sharpe series, chronicling the rise of Richard Sharpe, a Private in His Majesty’s Army at the siege of Seringapatam.

""The greatest writer of historical adventures today."" —Washington Post

Richard Sharpe. Soldier, hero, rogue—the man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles, whose green jacket he proudly wears.

Once again, in spite of my aversion to militarism, my usual squeamishness at bloody scenes, and so many other traits I have that would not usually make me a fit for Cornwell’s books, I absolutely enjoyed this one, as I did the others I’ve listened to (I’m into two different of his series). Not only that, but I found myself feeling with Sharpe the desire to kill those “bast*rds” along with him, the pleasure when he succeeds at his goal. Rough as he is, Sharpe is a sympathetic character. Cornwell’s characters are fully developed, his writing superb, the action engrossing. I don’t think I could watch this on a screen without closing my eyes for portions, but in this form it is fantastic. And the narrator does a fantastic job. No, I’m not enlisting in the military (too old, anyway). But wow!

Cornwell is amazing

Terrific read. Following Sharpe as he wonders about his skills and his conduct in a forthcoming battle. And then the wonderful scene where he defends Wellesly - such a magnificent story teller!

Sharpe learns he is a fighting soldier

Cornwell is spot on in his stories. What a perfect follow up to Patrick O’Brien and Aubrey and Maturain

Sharpe!!

I have always Cornwell‘s stories. Sharpe and the Saxon series are the best. Well worth the time to listen.

Very enjoyable
