Lumina struggles in her day-to-day life, managing her item shop all by herself.

The struggle is real.

Her wares often spoil or go out of style before customers have a chance to try them. But that all changes when a new dungeon appears just out of town, and with it, a chance at the life she's always wanted.

Strapping on the biggest enchanted sack she can find, she makes herself useful as a pack mule and a dungeon merchant, earning her keep and selling her wares in the thick of the adventure.

Being the first merchant in the dungeon gives her an advantage many envy.

She'll risk everything to follow her dream to be the greatest merchant to ever live!

Swing and Miss -Solid Premise but Lacked Execution

The Dungeon Shop, by Chris Ford, was a decent swing but ultimately, for me, a miss. The idea had a lot of promise, but the main character, and even most of the side characters, were inconsistent. Frequently from one sentence to the next, with their character spouting dialogue inconsistent with what we know so far.

The main character of Lumina acts as if she's anywhere between four and eighteen years old. I feel like the authors were going for something like a Cinnamon Bun character, but didn't land it. Instead, what you get is more of a discount version; not as saccharin sweet as Cinnamon but trying overly hard to be cute.

Frequently describing people as big bullies (even for the merest hint of something against her) or big dummies, or both, never seemed to fit. The overuse of both got tiresome as well.

On the topic of age, there's a glaring inconsistency in the book. Described by her character sheet a number of times as 17, she then has her birthday yet her next sheet still says she's 17 years old.

The story and idea as a whole weren't all bad, but enough of it was that I doubt I'd continue any further with the series. The dialogue, as mentioned, was often simple and childish, with no real depth to the characters. I liked the idea of setting up shop in a dungeon, which is why I jumped on this in the first place, but that's often more a side-note than the meat of the story.

Narration by Ashlinn Romagnoli was a little one-note. The voice of Lumina had me often thinking of Kaylee (Jewel Staite) from Firefly which I think suited the character. The rest, in particular the male voices, I didn't much care for.

I had a lot of issues with the production of this. Background clicks and the like I'll often let slide, but on multiple times there were issues with the actual file, like a small corruption. Jarring enough to make me stop and jump back to see if it were my earbuds playing up or in the file. Alas, it was in the file. I double-checked it wasn't just on my iPhone by listening to the sections on my PC and they were still there.

Overall, a disappointing story. The premise was solid, but the story lacked execution.

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I have not let this gift affect nor influence my opinions of this audiobook and have left an honest review.

Loved it

Ashlinn did one heck of a job. The story is really well written with gripping prose and an enticing plot. I enjoyed it immensely. ten out of ten.

Wholesome Slice of Life!

The cover and premise caught my attention immediately. The interior didn't disappointed. I was enthralled from start to finish. I was not familiar with this narrator but it was a wonderful performance. I'm glad I took a chance on this one. :)

Too much attachment...

At one point she gets ready to take a shower, whe doing so she thinks of two boys, one of which she just met a day ago and is sleeping on her floor. Why don't they just share the bed? Be the quickest relationship you can get as the second boy isn't going anywhere.

Not my cup of tea

This is a decent example of NPC perspective in a video game. The writing is not bad, but there is a ton of sexual undertones that just becomes grating. The npc takes everything seriously and is obviously oblivious to the tropes whereas the PC is gaming the system and knows where the tropes are taking the story. Some people will likely love this story, but it grew tiresome for me.

The Premise had Promise

but it just didn't fulfill it. I really wanted to love this book, but instead I found myself struggling to finish. It had two main problems. First, the dialog was too unnatural. The repeated usages of the same terms like "bully" or "girlie" from the same characters was obviously intended to give an specific impression of the characters, but instead of being consistent, it comes across as repetitive in a way that no one would ever speak. Second, the plot feels like it rambles too much. I think this is because of many things being far more detailed than they needed to be for how much they actually matter to the plot.

As for the narrator, she was fine, but I couldn't give the performance more than three stars because of all the problems with the audio editing.

good light listen

if your looking for a light listen then this is a good book. on those parameters I'd buy a sequel.
if your looking for something heavier or grittier skip this book.
all over worth a listen imo

It was a good lighthearted novel I just felt a little unhappy of how it ended thick skulled idiot

It was a fun lighthearted novel I just felt a little unhappy about how it ended I’m kind of hoping there’s another book after this one it would be interesting to see and listen to other than the very end it was quite good.

disliked peter

I really disliked Peter's character and development. he was just unlikable in my opinion. there was a lot of skill progression but little to no personal progression.
